Just picked up a Remington Model 700 SPS in .260 from the deal from Whittaker Guns in the Hunting Rifle forum. Thinking about doing some modifications and wanted y'alls opinions

This is the rifle I picked up. 260 Remington, 1 in 8" twist, 24" barrel



I am thinking about a McMillan Edge stock in GAP camo and fluting the bolt before I get it coated. Cerakote? NP3? Any other ideas? Trigger? I think this will be a fun gun to shoot and I prefer lighter rifles

Help me spend my money

Edge won't come in GAP. Used Black Ice out of Utah with good results on metal. Timney trigger. Should be a nice rig, have a custom lefty about the same.

That sure is a tempting offer from Whittaker's. I almost jumped on that deal but I don't want to add another caliber to my inventory.

If it were mine I would put it in a McM Hunters Edge, brown with a red pad. I have one on order for a 700 so you might say I am biased.

Interested it seeing how your plan develops.

New Mcmillan Hunter ADL (Sako Hunter for a Remington 700 EDGE fill, black base with olive and grey specs. It looks GREAT.

If it was mine, I'd bed it in a McMillan McM Hunter. Rather than pay for the lighter EDGE, I would instead opts for McSwirley color.

I have a 700 CDL-SF in 260 installed in McM Hunter and really (x10) like it! The 24" barrel allows for perfect balance (4me) mounted with a Leupold 4-12x40 in Leupold QRs. Come to think of it, I have several rifles installed in either the McM Hunter or its parent pattern, the Sako/Tikka Hunter, kinda like that stock style.

Not a bad idea, as mentioned edge don't come in GAP. I'd probably be more inclined to cut the tube to 22" and recrown than bolt fluting.

I had to jump on that deal too. Mine will be getting a trigger spring/tweak and will be bedded in a satin finish walnut Classic stock. May cut it back to 22". Should make a fairly pleasant little sporter.

Don't cut it right away. My short action 700's in wood Classic stocks handle like a dream with the 24" factory sporter barrels.

Put it in a good stock. Remind me I might have Wilson die's for you. Have lots of diff bullets you can try. Also have a extra tube in the closet if it's in a pinch.

Definitely go Edge, and you can have it painted in GAP camo if you desire. Timney trigger and you will have a fine rifle. Oh, and I would want the barrel at 22 inches as well.

How about setting the barrel back to chamber 140's with some room and chop the barrel to 22", then the Edge.

Edge fill construction in your choice of patterns. I'm partial to the Remington Classic myself. No real point in going regular fill, it just adds unnecessary weight.

Skip the bolt flutes. Their only real function is to create a path for crap to get down into the magazine, and also to lighten your pocketbook while functionally losing zero weight in the bolt (like sub 1 ounce).

Do your best Stephen Curry impersonation with the Xmark trigger and toss it into the nearest dumpster from 3 point range. Then find an old style Remington trigger or an aftermarket trigger, and you'll be golden.

NP3 or Birdsong on the coating. I've been less than impressed with Cerakote.

Hacksaw the barrel to 21" or so, and crown with a brass screw and valve grinding compound.

Scope it, shoot it, and then figure out what needs to change. If you get a new stock the Edge may not come in GAP but plenty of guys can paint it that way. Though for a new stock I'd be tempted to buy a B&C Alaskan TI stock just to save a little money. I wouldn't coat it until you need to change the barrel out.

Not to hijack, but do one of you that have the New McM Hunter have a pic of the bottom metal area?

The deals on these new 260s have been tempting me too.

Here's what I would do:
Cut to 22"
Have to bolt/action/lug/barrel melonited.
Put it in a ADL High Tech Specialties stock (Unpainted Edge if I wanted to spend the extra)

But my stainless Model Seven in a HTS stock keeps me from doing it.

I would shoot it as is, it will probably shoot great right away. That said I really like the Mcmillan Edge a lot, and like 24" barrels as well.
