Just picked up a Remington Model 700 SPS in .260 from the deal from Whittaker Guns in the Hunting Rifle forum. Thinking about doing some modifications and wanted y'alls opinions This is the rifle I picked up. 260 Remington, 1 in 8" twist, 24" barrel I am thinking about a McMillan Edge stock in GAP camo and fluting the bolt before I get it coated. Cerakote? NP3? Any other ideas? Trigger? I think this will be a fun gun to shoot and I prefer lighter rifles Help me spend my money

Edge won't come in GAP. Used Black Ice out of Utah with good results on metal. Timney trigger. Should be a nice rig, have a custom lefty about the same.

That sure is a tempting offer from Whittaker's. I almost jumped on that deal but I don't want to add another caliber to my inventory.
If it were mine I would put it in a McM Hunters Edge, brown with a red pad. I have one on order for a 700 so you might say I am biased.
Interested it seeing how your plan develops.

Graphite Black Cerakote
Talley LW's or burris 2 piece bases and seekins rings.
Leupold VX-3 3.5-10 or SWFA 6x Milquad reticle
Aluminum ADL Trigger Guard
Rebarrel with a Hart #2 in stainless steel when shot out at cut at 22"

If it was mine, I'd bed it in a McMillan McM Hunter. Rather than pay for the lighter EDGE, I would instead opts for McSwirley color.
I have a 700 CDL-SF in 260 installed in McM Hunter and really (x10) like it! The 24" barrel allows for perfect balance (4me) mounted with a Leupold 4-12x40 in Leupold QRs. Come to think of it, I have several rifles installed in either the McM Hunter or its parent pattern, the Sako/Tikka Hunter, kinda like that stock style.

I'd probably be more inclined to cut the tube to 22" and recrown than bolt fluting.

Mine will be getting a trigger spring/tweak and will be bedded in a satin finish walnut Classic stock. May cut it back to 22". Should make a fairly pleasant little sporter.

Don't cut it right away. My short action 700's in wood Classic stocks handle like a dream with the 24" factory sporter barrels.

Put it in a good stock. Remind me I might have Wilson die's for you. Have lots of diff bullets you can try. Also have a extra tube in the closet if it's in a pinch.

Definitely go Edge, and you can have it painted in GAP camo if you desire. Timney trigger and you will have a fine rifle. Oh, and I would want the barrel at 22 inches as well.

Here is one in an edge #3 Brux cut to 22" in 260 AI. Put together by a smith in your neck of the woods. 123's at 3090 I bet you will like your new 260.

Edge fill construction in your choice of patterns. I'm partial to the Remington Classic myself. No real point in going regular fill, it just adds unnecessary weight.
Skip the bolt flutes. Their only real function is to create a path for crap to get down into the magazine, and also to lighten your pocketbook while functionally losing zero weight in the bolt (like sub 1 ounce).
Do your best Stephen Curry impersonation with the Xmark trigger and toss it into the nearest dumpster from 3 point range. Then find an old style Remington trigger or an aftermarket trigger, and you'll be golden.
NP3 or Birdsong on the coating. I've been less than impressed with Cerakote.
Hacksaw the barrel to 21" or so, and crown with a brass screw and valve grinding compound.

Scope it, shoot it, and then figure out what needs to change. If you get a new stock the Edge may not come in GAP but plenty of guys can paint it that way. Though for a new stock I'd be tempted to buy a B&C Alaskan TI stock just to save a little money. I wouldn't coat it until you need to change the barrel out.

Not to hijack, but do one of you that have the New McM Hunter have a pic of the bottom metal area?
Is it pretty thin?

The deals on these new 260s have been tempting me too.
Here's what I would do: Cut to 22" Have to bolt/action/lug/barrel melonited. Put it in a ADL High Tech Specialties stock (Unpainted Edge if I wanted to spend the extra)
But my stainless Model Seven in a HTS stock keeps me from doing it.

I would shoot it as is, it will probably shoot great right away. That said I really like the Mcmillan Edge a lot, and like 24" barrels as well.

Bed the factory stock, float it generously and cut the barrel to 21 inches, tune trigger Don't waste money restocking and fluting the bolt, cerakote it down the track if you really like it

I wouldn't cut the barrel until I had the stock I wanted so as to put balance where I want it. A McM Classic edge would be on the list, but right now I'd probably consider a EH6 or EH8 from Manners. I think I could really like one of those as well. http://mannersstocks.com/hunting-stocks/For a scope, I'd look very hard at the LRHS from Bushnell.

Drum,
Edge it and cut back to 22" as it will balance better with the sporter barrel -
Send it to Eddie for bedding/coating -
Done -

Low end on a GAP rifle is three grand. The 10x S&B can be had from Eurooptic for just over two.

Keep the 24" barrel Game Scout EDGE, preferably with the adjustable cheek pc Timney 510 3-9 Zeiss with RapidZ 600
You can order the edge with no paint and send it off for the GAP camo. No way in hell I'd flute the bolt. It's worse than a solution in search of a problem.

Got a good deal on a Rem 700 in .260rem? Looking to "build"?
Resist The Impulse!
No matter how much $$ you pour into the action it won't hold value.
The barrel will never be more than a tomato stake. You're already set to blow $600 on a custom stock... Really ought tally it all up and see where you're heading.
Sell or trade your way to something that will hold value and not need $500 of work on the action.
If the rifle is unfired and complete w/box and all factory packaging, keep it that way.
Spending Big money without going all the way will just be half measures. Barrel, McM stock, and trigger are $1300 or more and then you got action job, truing, floorplate assembly; maybe an extended follower.... Don't forget the Win 70 safety assembly & shroud.
Start with a precision action and you are miles ahead. Plenty of Rem 700 footprint actions to choose from. Sure, they cost, but your investment will keep its value and you are looking at about the same money.

I bought a McMillan stock with edge fill here on the fire for a great price and we cleaned up all the bedding that was in it which was a bunch. Titanium bedded the action and put micro slick on the bolt, cerakoted the action and barrel in Sniper Grey and cerakoted the stock in Dry Earth. I will weigh it tomorrow and report back.

That gun shot the 123 Amax in Fed .260 brass over 44.5 grains IMR 4350 pretty well in both the factory stock, and the Manners. 4350 and 123s seems the place to start (and often end) with the .260. Can't wait to see what that gun does to ole' Bob Barker..... I bet the price is very wrong....

Did you leave it at 24 inches? Did you do anything on a trigger swap? I think you did well. Left it at 24" for no other reason than the extra 2" didn't bother me. Haven't done anything special to the trigger other than lighten it up a bit. Trigger upgrade will be next and maybe it for this rifle. Dogshooter worked up some loads that shot very well out of it before I switched the stock and had it cerakoted. I imagine it will still shoot so I don't plan on doing much more to it. I am not a bench rest guy, I just like to shoot critters with it so I am comfortable with the accuracy considering I never shoot off sandbags

That's a really nice set-up hunting rifle - really like the color combo on the stock/action.
Hope it brings you much hunting luck - will be expected to see it propped up on a big old muley sometime:)
