Congratulations! I absolutely love hunting deer in SD. I hunted the Rosebud Sioux reservation for 5 seasons and you have some huge deer but. I never saw an elk. What part of SD can one find elk?

depends, this year it's looking to be good with all the rain we got. upper 300's isn't impossible, infact if you do your homework and scout it's very doable. my minimum will be 300, but I've been doing my homework and I have a really good lead on one. 300+ is very achievable and a high success rate. tags are VERY hard to draw, and for residents only

Nice. I have one buddy who got a monster in CSP, carried it out whole on a trailer. I have another that got really frustrated and didn't see squat with an archery bull tag, not sure what part of the BH he hunted but it wasn't in the park. Sounds like the cats are taking a toll. I tell all my friends back there to apply. Eventually GFP will figure out how much money they could be making selling non-res tags and res draw odds will get even worse. Good luck!

I probably will start putting out cams in a week or two. downside is it's been so wet out here there's nothing to really dictate their movements like water tanks and such. fortunately my job keeps me out and about with wildlife daily all over my hunt unit. and I have some local leads on a couple nice ones. I'm going to hike/scout a bit to find the right one. to say I'm excited is an understatement. it will be probably 25 years before I draw this tag again.

Congrats on the tag!
I lived in RC for 5 years and never did get a bull tag. I saw a couple real nice bulls in the north hills. I was hoping they'd open a few tags out on the prairie south of Edgemont. I was always surprised to see elk running around out on the prairie.

Awesome! When do you get to go? Gun? Season is the whole month of october, which runs the same as antelope meaning a change of plans a little bit, but oh well. it's a rifle tag, still deciding on which rifle to take. either my grandpa's remington 30-06 or my new 280AI. I might have both on hand just because.

I drew unit 3 so I'm south of you. I saw lots of bulls this spring doing fawn capture surveys around jasper burn area though, they were bugling like crazy even into may when we were there. been seeing some nice ones in velvet too. this is a great year for antler growth, and I think I will be holding out for a bull with a big rack. good luck! feel free to pm me if you want specifics on where I saw them

It has been 15 years since I was hunting elk in the Black Hills. But then I am no longer a resident so I won't be hunting there for awhile if ever. Good luck.

heard him bugle before first light, got set up about 4-500 yards away. heard him fighting another bull for about 45 minutes. called him in, he bugled every so often on his way in. got to look at him for about 10 seconds through the binos and saw he was really symmetrical and no broken tines. his g4's are what sealed it for me. I wish all his tines were that long but I'm tickled regardless with him. he has good strong brows too. shot him walking at 80 yards dead center of the lungs, he walked a step and stood, so I put another through his ribs for good measure. both bullets hit within an inch of each other. pretty easy pack out to the truck with a friend helping me. he's hanging in another friends walk in cooler til saturday when we finish cutting him up. it worked out perfectly.
