Here is one of the newer Ruger African rifles ( this one is a .416) compared with a 1907 vintage Jeffery 404. They are more similar than not and weigh within ounces of each other. The Jeffery weighs 8 lp 8 oz and the Ruger 8 lp 4 oz. Balance and handling are almost identical.

Thanks for that photo Phil. Ruger seems to know what they're doing with hunting rifles.

I an sure you and an 8 1/2 # 404 with a steel butt plate would get along just fine.

I concur on the balance of the Ruger being slightly muzzle heavy. I bought a CZ 550 Lux 9.3x62 after Mule Deer spoke highly of his. When Ruger came out with the African 375, I told myself if they offered it in 9.3x62, I'd consider one. I held off until I saw this one and justified it by promising myself I'd sell the CZ, but still have both and doubt I'll part with either...

You can check out Youtube for this guy: Ricko Dewilde. He has several flicks on there of him hunting moose with his .375 Ruger African. He isn't worried about weight, scopes, muzzle devices ad nauseam; he just goes out and uses his rifle.

One of the major distributors to independent retailers like your LGS. They and several of their competitors often have manufacturers do special production runs of unique product just for them.
