What you plan to do with it?

I have assembled several on the AR platform. neat little cartridge that is easily made from 223/556. if you are not going to run it through a suppressed AR I really don't see a reason for it.

The Whisper is a niche cartridge IMO, suitable for suppressed rifles but it does not have a wide range of application...IMO. That said, with judicious application one can do most anything that needs doing within reason. Precision placement makes a lot of cartridges work beyond normal expectations.

There was one pig taken at the Hog Hunt with a .300 Blackout, 125gr Nosler BT. The young man hit the pig in the head, nonetheless the damage and exit was impressive. I've shot deer with the same bullet, at the same speed, out of a .30-30 Contender, and it worked effectively.

If you like the .30 carbine as a defensive weapon, the .300 Blackout in an AR shoots a bigger bullet 200 fps faster, which is hardly a bad thing. I have one for a "house gun". Uses the same bolts and mags as the 5.56.

I've hunted some with mine. Realize if you are of the cold chamber-while-hunting school, AR's are a problem to load quietly. If you try to ease a round into the chamber after spotting a deer, the bolt may not fully go into battery, and you get a "click" when you pull the trigger. Happened to me on one occasion.

If you are hunting small deer, hogs, or pigs, it is an effective round with good shot placement. And it consumes little powder. Even without a can it is not super loud, and has modest recoil for kids or light rifles. Be careful with subsonic loads on game as there are only a couple bullets that work well, IMO.

A light bolt gun, or a light single shot in .300 would be a neat rifle, IMO.

I don't have a barrel for the Encore in 300 Whisper but I've had a 14" Contender barrel now for several years and even had a centergrip XP-100 rebarreled to 300 Whisper a few years back (both with 1 in 10 twists) when I was competing in IHMSA silhouette matches hot and heavy.....sweet little round and very accurate.

I never hunted with the Contender or XP but I did loan the Contender to a buddy one fall and after working up a hunting load he took two deer with it that year....both right at 125 yds. and both were one shot kills.

If interested the below silhouette load shot extremely well in both the XP and my Contender barrel.

221 Fireball brass....Rem. 7 1/2 BR primer....Sierra 168 gr. # 2200....18.5 grs. of AA1680.

I really don't see much use for it in an AR platform, so much so after I bought my Rock barrel, its sat in the loading room now for 2 years or more.

I realized that suppressing, but adding all the action noise, doesn't help the situaion and bought a bolt gun in 300/221 and it sits with a suppressor on it.

Plus the powder you have to use in an AR to cycle it, is louder powder than I can get by with in the bolt gun.

194 lehighs and its good to 150 yards pretty easy, and nothing has gone very far after the hit, all leaving good trails.

I have been shooting it since 2001. Killed lots and lots of deer with this round suppressed subsonic and suppressed supersonic. No recoil, quiet deer killing round. I have it in Contender carbine 16" and Noveske AR SBR in 10.5". Lots of fun to shoot. If you reload, even better, cheap and plenty of options on bullets and powders.

I have a 16.125" SSK/Shilen barrel for a Contender. I have played with subsonic stuff but mostly with 150 & 168gr super sonic. Bang/flop on antelope at 175yds.
I have one in an AR carbine also, but haven't played with it much.

If you get one and plan on anything close to sub sonic, you need an 8" twist. Most 10" twists won't stabilize a 220gr at 980 fps
