An interesting 340 in 22 Hornet. Not one I'd get after, but one you don't see around, especially in that shape.

Should be a model 342, 340's were 30-30. But that is Gorgeous wood for a 340 family gun. Neighbor has an 840 with nicer wood than that, always cracks me up to see fancy wood on utility guns.

Yeah, you're probably right about the model. I have always wanted to like the looks of the real clean ones, but availith it not.

Dunno.. mine is pretty darned accurate. It's not a 99 in regards to looks, but sure cost me a lot less than a 99.

When I was a kid my buddy had a 30-30. He killed quite a few deer with it.

I have an uncle who killed a truck load (not as many as a boat load, and quite a few less than a sh*t load) of Pennsylvania deer back in the 50's-60's with a 342 Hornet, mostly one shot kills to the head/neck. The last one needed a magazine full when he tried a chest shot. Cured him of that folderol, and he switched to an Amish Assault Rifle- a Remington 760 '06.

340s don't get much air play. I've had a good triple-two on my radar for some time now. Not a 722, I know? But a 722 is not a Savage!

Always learn important things here. I always thought a boat load was greater than a sh*t load. I believe a sh*t load varys considerably from load to load.

During the Korean war an Army unit was pinned down and Chesty Puller and some Marines were on the way to help them. Chesty gets on the radio and asks the Army commander how many North Koreans are out there and the Army guy says "there's a whole bunch of them". Chesty says "Dammit I want to know how many are out there". The Army guys says, "There's too many for me to count." Chesty says "Is there a Marine there", The Army guy goes and gets a Marine Corporal and puts him on the radio. Chesty says, "Son, this is Chesty Puller, how many dam North Koreans are out there?" The corporal answers "Colonel there's a whole sh*t load of them." Chesty gets off the radio, turns to his XO and says "Thank God there was a Marine there. Now I know what we're up against".

My vote for largest unit of measure goes to sh*t load. A sh*t load, in my book, is only exceeded by a f**kin' sh*t load. Of course all loads (be it boat, butt, krap, train, car, etc...) are all increased in capacity with that modifier.

As a real little kid I judged my old man's 340 .30-30 and my uncle's Hornet to be the very definition of high powered hunting rifles. All else paled in comparison. I would sit with a .30-30 round and a Hornet round in my hand and contemplate all the big game in the world I could hunt with those two. Then I would get my fingers smacked for getting into the ammo stash. Small wonder I hold both of those two cartridges in high esteem today. (If the old man knew I was swiping .22LR ammo too, to discharge by smacking them with a shovel on the sidewalk, I wouldn't hold that round in as high regard as I do now, from the lingering pain of the ass-whupping I would've- should've- gotten.)
