I ordered one from the Co. two weeks ago. It's one that was ready to go. Still have not received it so after several calls to Sharps Rifle I do think I have all worked out. Supposed to ship today. Some was my fault, most was FFL's fault, he didn't put my order, name or anything on the FFL copy, no cover sheet or anything according to Sharps, so they didn't know what order the FFL was for. Took almost two weeks for me to figure out all.
Lady I talked to seemed to know what was going on, I bet it ships today and I get it for sure on Thursday.
Makes me happy, ready for it and the learning process to start.

Yes a 45/70. Looking forward to this one. Going to sit here and get the rifle before ordering anything for it. The proper stuff, BP I think I can get some within 30 miles of here.
Bullets, will order BP lead, may have some brass, if it's not a special brass I do have a 45/70 lever smokeless rifle, so think I should or may have some on a bench shelve somewhere, will look.
Dies, have some for the lever 45/70 hope they are OK for this one. Primers, can't find any of the I think it's 215M or 250 cci. Wads, none on order, guess I'll go with what Sharps has for now, going to have to learn a lot to go paper, so will wait on that for a while.

I found some 215's, surprisingly enough at a Gander Mtn. You making it to Quemado? I can bring some for you.

Thanks, but not heading that way. I'll go to Gander out here maybe tomorrow. Didn't even think to check them.
Sounds each year like a good one out in western NM, but real close to the family vacation time.

Yes Sir it is.
Will see how it shoots one day. Going to take time to find all I need. Brass ordered, BP after tues when Seller gets the ATF form, primers not going to be hard to find, wad out of leather, just need to locate the Lyman 457125's or learn quick like to cast the bullets. Other then that I think she will shoot just fine.
Thanks very much for the picture post.

There is a group on here that learned the secret.
Going to be lots of fun learning the passwords.
Plan to shoot a lot.

Will have to look towards a buffalo in the future someday. That would be a bucket list item for sure.

Thank you.
I have watched you guys for several years do this with a Sharps, going to smoke them out at the Range and in the field.
Will take it deer hunting for sure, then maybe a buffalo hunt.

Morning Bill.

Going to work out for sure. I promise. Getting me in a large loud group is where the hearing fails, just too much sound for these old ears. I'm just excited to finally own such a nice rifle.

Great looking rifle, Gordon! We'll have to have a shoot someday soon. I happen to know a place... grin

Bill will take good care of you, for sure. E.T. has gotten a bunch of us afflicted with the "Holy Black Syndrome" and Bill makes sure we have the proper treatment regimen to keep us going. grin

Yeah! One they had on the sight. He saw about 40 hogs he said last night on the place. That constitutes a herd of Pygmy buffalo!!!! But I don't think they are just gonna stand there and let y'all rip off about 4 or 5! LOL!

45/70! Gonna try to get enough shooting done with it on time to take it to Colorado in October.

Pics when available!!!

Time for a little up date on The Rifle, my Sharps.

Very interesting, the learning curve. Of course just starting that curve. Read and read on the how. I had never loaded any BP cartridge. Learned how to do a basic load.
Loaded 8 rounds and took the rifle to the range and shot them just to see and hear the Sharps. It worked fine.
Came home and loaded another 26 rounds and a few days later took it back to the range for another session. Had fun, 26 rounds does push me and my shoulder. Trying to learn the buckhorn sights on this rifle. Managed the last 4 rounds just on the black target. Was happy with that. Iron sights do push these old eyes.
Reloaded 27 rounds over a few days, got tied up this last weekend so on Tuesday back out to the range.
Remember it's hot out here. Lucky to have some shade to shoot under at the range.
This time, at the range, shot 19 rounds when I guess the pain of a 45/70 off a bench got to me. Ended the day at 19 shot rounds. 11 of 19 were in the target. Not small mind you but I'm just happy to land on target. Target is I guess about one foot circle. This is at 100 yards. Making progress.

Have to rest the shoulder for an up coming dove hunt then back to the bench. As soon as I get tired of 100 yards will move over to the 250 yards and start over on the learning.

Sounds like you're getting the hang of it and also how to pace yourself with the number of rounds out as they approach your pain threshold. My first close encounter was via my 45/110, loaded 50 rds of 520 gr Gov't greasers over 95 grs of 2F then off to the range. The following morning thought I had gone 15 with Joe Frazier.grin.... The bench also enjoys adding its two cents to the recoil/pain equation so now all load testing and fun shooting is strictly off sticks as this is my hunting SOP...

Yes on the sticks for sure. Takes a lot of felt recoil out when standing, sitting etc.
Standing or sitting size? What do you guys think.

Gordon, what weight bullets you shooting?

Some of the 400-440 grain models will kick a little less than the 500's, and still shoot well.

Did you ever shot this one?

Never have shot that one Pat.

Shooting a 500 gr. I just need not to shoot quite so much at a sitting and need to get off the bench. Rifle range only have benches, none of the standing or shooting behind a bench. This one does have an area where you can lay down and shoot prone so when the sitting sticks come in I may be able to get away with sitting and my pad. We will see. If that doesn't work I'll go out to the farm area and set something up out there. I do like the shade at this time of the year.
No shade at farm and it's a lot further.

Good idea Bob. Had a brand new one last April. Just took it out of the box at Eds place. Two hours later it was destroyed by nature. So was Houston Pats, his big one.
May still go get another one, we will see.

Did you ever shot this one?

I don't think this is too bad a time to bring up a mossy old BPCR homily,..."The Law of diminishing Returns"

Given bullets of equal WEIGHT,.....and of the same caliber, and driving em' with Black Powder,....at a certain point one achieves absolutely NO more velocity, and just starts inducing more violent recoil.

Inarguable and proven fact, this.

I've been amused and somewhat baffled at the insistence in mind numbing , body wrenching, abusive recoil, for a LONG time.

STAY with heavy bullets,....just back off on your charge weights a bit, ....and enjoy life.

I did get in a little rush this last time Greg.
Not going to rush quite like that in the future.
I bought so many of the 500 grain bullets, yes Sir I will be using them for a while. Just going to slow down between shots.
I'm not in a competition but the weather was hot. So I was rushing things just to see how the rifle handled strings of shot with just the blow tube. Rifle did fine, OP started whining grin.

Not really loading that much powder, less than I started with by 10 grains.
Part of the learning process. Wish I had discovered BPCR rifles a long time ago like so many on the campfire.

Pard,IMHO the 45's seem to come into their own with bullets of 500g or better. The Old Dead Guys and Sharps Rifle Co. stated that heavy bullets and heavy charges were the recipe for long range shooting. You ain't totally skrewed yet!! Wait'll me and the boys get ya blasting paper patched slugs!!!!

I don't feel like I'll get REAL longer ranges accuracy with anything much less than a 500 +,.... my 440 grain Leeth "Chicken Bullet" starts spreading em' at ranges over 300 M.

I didn't see it mentioned and you probably are using filler, but there can be no air space when shooting black, or it will cause dangerous pressure spikes.

That's a pic for the ages reminds me of a similar event with a 44/90 in an Iowa bean field! Your new shades were never meant to see Wyoming now were they? OTOH they were sacrificed for some serious laughter. grin
