yawn ..............
soccor the most popular sport in the world

all ya need is a field(grass or dirt it don't matter)
a ball(some places a human head will suffice)
and a bunch of people running around kicking at the ball
and maybe 4 sticks stuck in the ground to mark the goal
yay whoopee.......................

and it drags on for hours

oh boy the score was 1-0

here in America

if ya cant make the cut for other sports or just plain ole suck at other sports

you can always make the soccor team......................
bwahahahahahahahahaaa!!!!!

I hope those Nazi bishes lose..........

either way while the game is on
I will be watching some paint dry in my basement

Many years ago when I was a college student, the university put together a field day where all the teams went at one another in a wide array of run, throw, shoot, pitch, hit competitions. The soccer team kicked ass.

USA looked better against China than they had looked in the previous three matches, mostly due to more aggressive attack defense at midfield, quicker and more precise passing, and running pressure on goal. Even though they did not score high, they did generate many opportunities. As usual, the back line was really solid. I think that the change in starting lineup - in part forced by 2 suspensions - gave good opportunity for some aggressive and talented subs to make a mark, and they did. I hope that any decision to start "regulars" against Germany does not ruin the previous effect.

Germany is a strong/tough outfit and know how to foul without getting called, and am thinking that they will not wear down by late match as much as previous USA opponents have done. Their one weakness may be lack of speed in their back four and the USA may be able to exploit that with wide runs and quick/precise passing.

It should be a good match. No predictions here.

BTW, some otherwise solid and sensible folks here seem to like to put down soccer. To each his own. There are some sports that interest me little. But, would say that, overall, many folks who deride soccer seem to have little or no understanding of the fine points and strategies of the game and lack the appreciation that can come with the above. I hesitate to suspect that any of our Campfire posters are among those uninformed/unappreciative.

I agree with you - she is very good and seems to be worth the publicity headaches for team USA. That back four work with her so well - contributes a lot to her remarkable record.

The derogatory comments above by renegade50 are interesting in their intensity, and 1minute points out factors that few "athletes" in other sports will recognize. For example, if you placed most NFL all-stars in the role of center midfielder and sent them out to run and work for 45 solid non-stop minutes on the USA womens' team, I believe they would be tongue-hanging, panting, drenched with sweat and oxygen-craving fools before the period were half finished. Doubtful? Try it.

USA handled the ball VERY well against China, better than they had done in a couple of the previous games. However, China IMO just plain stunk.! It was nice they got that far in the tournament, but it was pretty obvious they were the lesser team. USA just plain wore the Chinese out in the first half. The Chinese were sucking air the last half, badly. At least, that's the way I saw it.

I think that you have seen/called it quite well, except I wouldn't say the Chinese team stunk. They definitely were outclassed, and the USA did wear them out - but our team has been doing that regularly against other good teams. The USA team is deep with very good players off the bench having a nice variety of skills - that is part of the "wear-out" factor. The Chinese had a couple of very good position players but lacked a coordinated attack past midfield - and the USA defense will stuff a team like that. It will be a very different situation against the Germans. I hope the USA coach makes good decisions about whom to start and when/whom to sub, and calls a quick touch-pass strategy for a while. But - who knows - I'm not a coach.

I think this is the best I've ever seen the women play. Ball handling skills are top notch and very little fouling. You know Germany is getting frustrated getting their pockets picket every trip down the pitch...just straight up excellent soccer.

The funny thing is they're fans of a game where they can't keep the ball in play for more than 10 seconds, or a game where they mostly just stand around.

Fantastic match. The U.S. women played their best match of the tournament against the other best team in the world. Peaking at the right time is always a good thing.

Interesting take, it, soccer, has been around way longer than "our" games.

Seems often we can't accept whats out there, I wonder due to the fact we don't accell at it right away, and have to make up our own games...

Not that sports is worth a flip anyway in my books generally speaking.

Of all the sports out there, soccer was one that I enjoyed the most though. And it was a fit sport, there was not much for breaks, like basketball actually, but running a lot futher.

They slacked off a couple times in the second half, but were otherwise dang tough on Germany. Those penalty(s) in the box could be their downfall if they don't get that under control...

Last chance Eyeball is Sunday night. U.S. will play either Japan or England for the World Cup title, the biggest title in Soccer.

Pretty big deal to beat the rest of the World...

That last word was what it looks like. WORLD, not best in the US etc... but best in the WORLD...

I was proud to compete in national rifle matches and did fairly well up at the top... but it was nothing to compare to if I had the ability to compete and win in the olympics.

Sorry, but im thinking baseball and football are more mental considerations and require players with more diverse skill sets to address more facets of those games for success.

I mean if the object is to have a game where you have to take a ball over the opponents goal, why wouldn't you grab it and try to take it around, over or through or throw it to a team mate to do the same rather than handicap yourself trying to get the job done in an irrational manner as a retard would?

It reminds me of a shooting match were you must use defective bullets or do archery with crooked arrows. It make no sense.

Let's invent basketball where the players must kick, head. knee or elbow the ball through the hoop.

I would agree about baseball being mental, particularly with regard to calculating the possibilities associated with each pitch and reacting correctly. But, that thinking mainly applies to one position - the one you are playing - and not every pitch brings a needed reaction for that position. Yes, a good all-around baseball player must have high and somewhat diverse physical skills - but they don't need to have stamina over a sustained period with no breaks.

In football, the player is given specific plans/orders to execute during any given play (most are not required to reason or know much) and the action time is very brief. Then, a rest, and you get some more specific orders. Lots of specialization. Physical strength/speed required? - yes. Brainpower essential? - not much for most. Stamina required? - not a major issue.

When a person is playing soccer well, the entire game can be a very individual reactive and decisive process - for each individual player - and those decisions/reactions are expected to take place immediately - and effectively - on your own. Specific and detailed orders are rare. The on-field thinking is conceptual/analytical and reactive - difficult to know what is coming next but one is expected to react well, without prompting.

Right - not for everyone and some never can see themselves becoming a soccer fan. That takes nothing away from the interesting and unique characteristics of the sport. Fun thread.

regardless of how folks feel about the game, it's merits or lack thereof, the game was a good win for the US team.

You're clearly not much fan of sports. If football players played both offense and defense, as well as multiple positions, then yes, you'd be correct. They don't, in American football. If you want that, start following (or playing) rugby.

Baseball, yes, to a degree as the most difficult feat in professional sports is consistently hitting a professionally pitched baseball. Outside of that, it's a rather pedestrian set of physical skills in comparison at least on the individual basis (and I have a great appreciation for baseball and baseball players).

Everytime the ladies team has a match a co-worker of mine ask me if I'm going to watch and I always say no I'm not that bored yet! He always gets mad and walks off mumbling something. Yesterday same thing but he follows up with "well 30 million people around the world play soccer everyday". I looked at him and said that's so they don't have to watch it. He didn't speak to me for the rest of the day or so far today. LOL

I just can't understand the concept of soccer being boring.

90 minutes of constant running, strategy, etc., with no time out (except for bleeding head injuries). It's A display of superb conditioning, coordination, and athleticism.

I certainly agree with your position about the most difficult feat in professional sports. As an example, Michael Jordan, a great athlete and at least average in the outfield, looked like a low grade bozo at the plate when he was trying to "make it" with a pro team in AZ.

However, among the best baseball players, I see their other skills as anything but pedestrian. The long-time standard for a good player - "run, field, throw, hit for average and for power" - means:
excellent speed on the base path and at your position - a very quick start and ability to cover ground fast and under control;
to field the ball quickly, control it immediately, and do the correct thing with it NOW (e.g.: try shortstop like the good ones);
throw the ball far, with a flat trajectory and hit your target accurately (especially outfield, catcher, third base and shortstop);
and the outstanding hitting speaks for itself.
Some baseball games can seem slow and boring, but excellent individual plays are anything but pedestrian to me because very few people can meet that noted standard.

Oh, I agree that a pro athlete is not "pedestrian" compared to the standard, garden variety fan.

That said, when the totality of the skill sets are taken into consideration, a baseball player's in comparison to a football player or basketball player or hockey player, or even a soccer player, is "pedestrian". That's no insult, because only against other pros in other sports does it come into play.

You're right that those skills are there, but look at a basketball player; similar running and explosiveness, far more endurance required, greater jumping ability, similar (though not necessarily for range, though for accuracy and ability to hit targets while moving) hand-eye coordination. Football the same, with much more power and the ability to take an impact added. Hockey is just nuts; I can't even stand on skates and those bastards do what they do? Hand-eye coordination to control and/or block/catch a puck at well over 100 mph? Soccer player; endurance, quick burst capability, FOOT-eye coordination, including distance and accuracy, the ability to use the knees and head on the ball with touch and accuracy.

"Pedestrian" isn't the right term; I know that. It was the one that came to mind. Across the board, the level of skill of any professional athlete in those sports, and many others, is ridiculous. To malign them, as some have, is silly.

Instead of one girl tearing off her shirt when a goal is scored I think they should all tear off their shirts whenever anything significant happens. A ref throws a flag, off go the shirts. A penalty kick, off with the shirts. Ball out of bounds, off with the shirts. If two minutes have gone by and nothing has happened, off with the shirts!

When one of the two or less goals in the entire game is scored, they should all remove their shorts as well.

I’d watch it. Hell, I’d go attend a game in person.

it makes perfect sense to me, the masses want micro wave or fast food NOW!

they also want to see the pinball game light up, so they know when to cheer.

that's why football went from one score can win it all 13-7 type games of our youth. To offense minded, hey "let's light up the scoreboard, even chix know to cheer or boo for a touchdown"

some great baseball games have been 1-0, some great football games 9-6 or similar low scores.

but only more than the casual fan gets that aspect, the drama that any score can turn this game.

thus why soccer doesn't appeal to a wide variety of Americans.

and if you've never played, or been actively involved with it, you've no idea of the superior conditioning it takes to play it at all, leave alone well.

don't hold it against em cause they don't get it Mike,

heck lots of folks think the 2nd amendment is outdated too

Oh, that was not good. Wow.

Well, rematch of the 2011 Women's World Cup final; Japan v U.S.A. Should be a great match.

Now that would make the game "awesome".

Fun thread.

A great justification for triathelons and marathons being the greatest sports. wink

Actually, it makes a great case for decathletes and those that play sports like water polo (rugby in a damned pool) far more so than triathletes and marathon runners (especially the latter).

This^^^.

My disenthusiam with soccer developed years ago when I realized the progressive cause of an attempt to pollute the USA with European mores which were designed to seduce us to an inferior status in the world which included abandoning the blessed Imperial system of measurements we used to achieve world domination with the much more "effecient" and "worldly" metric system.

I wouldn't call it bad luck, but a fairly common misplay/error in judgment; one just happened to end in total disaster.

Doubtful? Try it.

Laura Bassett was her name. Felt really bad for her.

Julie Johnston, USA, did the same thing for Japan's second goal in the final. Fortunately it was absorbed by the lopsided score.

My daughter is a center back for her team, and it's not uncommon for the defenders to move the ball around the backfield using their own keeper in the mix. During a game last year my daughter turned away from pressure and passed the ball back to the keeper who picked up her foot for some reason, and let the ball roll right into the goal....a perfect score for the other team! blush All she could do was stand there with a WTF look on her face.

This exactly. If you haven't played soccer, were either too "manly" or more likely not manly enough, sit in your armchairs and bitch about a girls game. Team USA done good.
