Had the pleasure of meeting Carl today, and we spent a few hours burning powder. Weather was a little warm, but low wind made shooting conditions very favorable. We worked on targets from about 350 yards, on out to 1800 yards.

Had a good time and validated a few things too. The Berger .308" 215 Hybrid was consistent and accurate out to 1800 yards from a 1/12 twist 308, started around 2600 fps.

Carl was shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor stoked with 140 gr AMax. Amazing round. It was accurate and consistent to 1800 as well.

I shot the 1800 yard target with two bullets. First was the 208 Amax. At 2620 fps, JBM estimated 24.4 mils, at 70F, and 25.3 Hg. I applied 24.5, and it was hitting into a rock target 30" wide and 20" tall.

I knew the 208 was stable at that distance, but wasn't sure about the 215, with speed down around 1030 fps, started from the 1/12 twist barrel.

I fired two rounds wit the 215 at 2600 fps, using the 208 data. They both hit in the same spot a couple mils high. So it was a little flatter with the higher BC of .696 vs .648 for the 208.

I went back and looked at JBM for the 215 and it calc'd 22.8 mils, so it was hitting right where it was supposed to.

I was using the SWFA 12X, on a 45 MOA base. I was able to dial a direct hold with about 8 mils to spare in the erector.

Shane what is your load data with the 308 Win with those heavies if you are able to share? What barrel length?

I've got a 26.5 Inch barreled 308 Win Omark, that I am keen to try the 208 Amax in. It has a 1-12 barrel too.

Wowzers! That's a far piece. Good shooting and shows just how capable/versatile the 308 is.

My load data:

Win brass
moly-tumbled 208 Amax, or 215 Berger.
CCI 200 primer
RL-17 - 49.0 gr (Max load....work up with caution)
OAL: 208 Amax 3.05", 215 Berger 3.10"

I originally worked up this data in a factory 26" Remington varmint barrel with the long throat, and 1/12 twist. In cooler weather I was getting 2675 fps with the 208 AMax. The 215 Berger was clocking 2600 fps.

Along the way the barrel was cut/braked. The barrel proper is now 22". Velocity with the 208 Amax is 2620 fps, and the 215 Berger seems to be tracking very close to the 2600 fps data. I believe the summer temps have given the RL17 a little more life, and of course warmer air is a little thinner than cold air.

I didn't chrono the 215 load in the 22" bbl, in summertime (need to do that). But it shoots to about 2600 fps per drop data.


Here is my drop charts. I used a calculator to figure the intermediate drops. Our firing point was about 4640 feet elevation. This data was calc'd via JBM at 70F, and 25.3 Hg.

Our 1800 yard target was a small pile of rocks that measured 30" wide, and 20" tall.

We both made hits within three rounds.

The weather was unusually calm (and hot). We didn't need to apply and windage or wind holdoff at 1800. That doesn't happen very often.

How'd you guys make out during that storm last night? Looked like lots of lightning Pretty smokey in town this morning, something must be burning.

Looks like a fun day to be out there shooting. I've had a couple days this year that were similarly still, it's almost strange to shoot way out there without a windage hold! A 10,700 ft equivalent atmosphere helped me out, I'm sure.

You must be getting as much or more out of the 308 as anyone.

Yeah it is. 10,700 ft sounds like a fun day shooting. That should give everything longer legs. I'll have to run the calcs just for curiosity.

We had a slightest breeze from the right, but I think a little bit of spin-drift was cancelling it out at 1800.

Been busy, back in the grind at work and all, but wanted to jump in and thank Shane for showing me how it's done!

Longest hits ever for me, from 470 and 550 and 650 and was stoked to connect even at 980 or so - then simply amazed to see him nail it at 1800. Then even more so to see me do it, 3.5 seconds hang time and all! Pretty fun stuff, Montana style.

'tripper, tell us about your rifle. I've been enjoying a Creedmoor myveryownself.

Sure, it's a Ruger 77 Hawkeye Predator with a screwed-on 20 MOA EGW rail, Buckeye Optics dark earth rings and a rear focus SWFA 10x42 MQ scope. Load recipe: Hornady brass, 42.6gr H4350, Fed 210M, and Hornady 140 Amax which gets me 1.1-1.5" three- or four-shot groups at 200 and called good enough. To fit the drops we came up with on the day mentioned above, my velocity is 2717-2720ish... This second-hand rifle took a little work to get feeding (new mag box helped a lot) and I also relieved around the mag box, bedded the lug and free-floated it. Because of the high rail, I have to use a small cheekpad but I think it's come together fairly well and very glad to be rid of ringmounts. Really like the 2-stage trigger, perfect in my opinion. Hope to wack an antelope in August.

Gotta thank Shane some more as I showed up with something wacked out, off about 3 mils somehow! He just took it in stride, helped me achieve a new zero and went to showing me how to reach out there. He's a Good Guy for sure. All together, way more fun than poking holes in paper at a 100!

OT, same rifle I'm running. Mine has egw rings and a LRHS. Just added a Wyatt DBM....
