Both in excellent condition with no signs of use. Chinese Model 4 (CZ 452 copy) or Soviet era TOZ 17-1. Both rifles cost the same. Which should I choose and why? Thanks in advance.

I think that almost any new or used Marlin would be a better choice than any Chinese, Russian, or Warsaw Bloc .22 trainer.

Yea, I would go with the Marlin XT.22 bolt with the tube feed.
then you can use .22 shorts, longs and LR's

Although I never had one, for cheep cheep, the CZ99 looks interesting. On line $150 and cabelas sale $225. I think the company is Zestava.

I agree with everyone else, and would suggest a very little more get you a lot more. My favorite Ruger American run about $300 these days. Should be a lifetime keeper.

Can we buy Chinese guns in the USA? I though Clinton put on a ban or something to that effect? Why wont Slavic post his country in his profil?

I never heard of TOZ 17, so I did a Google Images, pictures:

https://www.google.com/search?q=TOZ+17-01&biw=1333&bih=918&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=OoeSVbP-LImuggS8r6ywBg&ved=0CB0QsAQ#imgrc=hXuGOq5NTwXjCM%3A

And a range report (I find this surprising,FWIW) here is one very satisfied customer (no affiliation):

Once I was in Google Images, I tried "Chinese Model 4". Oh my, I like those. Not firearms, much better smile

That Chinese(Clayco)model 4 I believe is the same as the Model JW-15A Golden Arrow Brand(identified as he Weekend Sporter)that was imported by Century International Arms Inc. back in the late 80's. I've got an issue of RIFLE that has a full length article(by Ben Johnson?)on it. Suggested retail was $89. He was so impressed that he bought a couple.

I don't know anything about the other rifle.

Bought Model 4. While Soviet gun had much better iron sights (similar to Nagant rifle) the Chinese came with 1" rings which is a big plus. I will test is out next week to see how it shoots.

The current production Zestava rifle look like crap to me. The Yugoslav-built rifle built in the past and imported by Interarms, Charles Daly, and Remington were much better finished than the current stuff that is so bad that it would may a hyena gag.

I saw a rack of these at Cabelas and the metal work looked pretty darn good. The action design looked good. The stock was horrible. The stock could not have be finished worse if they did it deliberately! Hyena, heck maggot. They offered a 22mag and 22LR. Given a choice on a cheep-cheep, I would rather sacrifice the wood than the steel. I have read some owners did a fairly good stock refinish. I have to agree to the point that I would not buy one. Life to too short to waste time on something like that. Mine life anyway. Your age may vary.

My Remington M5 Zastava routinely puts 10 Aguila Target rounds in a shade over half an inch at 50. Groups open up to the inch range with bulk ammo.

The triggers are pretty easy to adjust.

As far as I know the only difference between the CZ99 and that Remington was the stock. And, those can be refinished. The thing caught my eye was the availability in 22mag.

I think Slavik missed a bet, but; that is just another IMHO. He maybe in some desolate part of the world where choices are limited and looks like he has done ok.

This, then move ‘up’ to a CZ later.

Never had one of the the Russian guns but have had two of the Norinco JW-15s...both were excellent shooters. One was bought by a friend and the other I sold on GunBroker for over twice what I paid for it...
