well, not a true lefty gun with right hand eject and safety. i just picked up a pair of these guns in 6mm rem and 308. both have been rebarreled to heavier barrels.the 6mm has a 24in light varmint and the 308 has a 24in heavy. both guns are in very good shape and so far are shooting very well. the 6mm is a 1-12 twist.

I used to have the 788 LH in 6MM. It shot fantastic with H4831 and remington 80gr. HP powerlock bullets. Unfortunately mine developed too much head space and the throat was washed out so I sold it cheap and bought a Rem 700 bdl in LH 22-250. That was 25 years ago!

I've got a LH 308 788 that I bought new somewhere in the 1970's.

For a lot of years it was the only big game rifle I had. Not surprisingly, it shot well and killed a lot of deer.

I still use it sometimes out of both nostalgia and effectiveness.

It has always shot around MOA with Remington ammo. I refinished the stock about 25 years ago and it looks somewhat better but it still ain't no beauty except in the way it shoots.

Would be very surprised if your rifles did not perform extremely well.

Congrats on your new rifles.

yep, they are not the prettiest remingtons ever made but most shoot well.hardwood stocks on all of them.my 308 has had the burn treatment but it doesn't look to bad.i've got 425.00 in both of these guns not counting the scopes. i'm seeing lefthand ones go for way more then that on gunbroker so i think i did ok.

Had one in .308 set up as a full stock Mannlicher with scout scope. Accurate, and handy. But, never could get used to the boxy magazine sticking down from the bottom right at the balance point. No comfortable way (for me) to carry the rifle one handed down by my side.

I bought a 308 in the mid 70's and found it very accurate. As Orion2000 stated, I never got used to the magazine protruding below the receiver, plus it was quite heavy. It has sat unused in the safe for years. Also have a LH581 which sees heavy use. The right side eject never bothered me. Congratulations on a nice set of twins.

I've used a 6mm since I was 12 and still use it each year. It received a custom walnut stock for it's 40th birthday a bit ago. It's dropped its share of chucks with 80 gr CoreLokts and deer with 100 grains of the same make. I just got a matching 308 but haven't got it out to shoot yet - expect good things, though, if it's like most.

I suspect the protruding magazine never bothered me because the 788 was my first big game rifle and I did not know the difference.

Fortunately, it still does not bother me. I think I am just used to it. And for me, the 788 is easy to shoot and easy to hit what I'm aiming at.

I still think it is a helluva lot of gun for the money.

I love mine. Thought about selling it. Glad I didn't.

I blew it and got rid of my .308 years ago.

I shot my biggest dall sheep in the Brooks Range with my 788 which I had rebarreled to .243 Improved.
Rifle was accurate but always felt clunky and crude, I don't miss it at all.

Gents, In 1965 when the 788 was an infant, I bought one in 22-250 Rem and used it to kill a lot of Chucks & Crows.
The Powerlokt HP Fact load was extremely accurate.
I learned later that the accuracy delivered by the 788 Rifle did not come entirely from the BBL, Action & stock , but indeed from a unique trigger mechanism used only in the 788.
This trigger had a much shorter "lock" time, meaning from the time the trigger was released, to the time the firing pin struck the primer, the lapse of time during that period was less and the Shooter had less time to wander off his sight picture.
I believe the 788 has the shortest lock time of all rifles manufactured, with the 110 Savage running second.

I purchased my LH 788 6mm in the early 70's and it is the only rifle i shot the barrel out on.

I bought a lh 788 in 6m/m and shot it quite a bit. It was nicely accurate but it also seemed clunky and crude. The bolt handle came off twice requiring trips back to Remington for repairs. I traded it off in 1972 for a Ruger 7x57. I don't miss it.

I have a 308 Lefty that I bought in 1975 for $104.95 (there was a $5 premium for lefties from the RH price of $99.99).

I still have the manual, price tag, receipt, etc. I found them in some old papers the other day.

Took my LH 788 308 to the range yesterday. I'm giving it to one of my grandsons who is hooked on hunting so I wanted to get it sighted in.

Shooting some pretty old Remington 150gr factory loads, it shot a .416 inch three shot group at 100 yds and 2.88 inches at 200 yds.

It was my first big game rifle and now it will be the first big game rifle for my grandson. I'm delighted.

I have a LH 788 in 6mm that I've taken a few deer with. I've settled on a load with Nosler BT bullets. I've also taken whitetails with 100 grain Core-Lokt and Winchester Power Points.
The little 7-pointer below succumbed to a NBT. The entry wound looks a little far back, but the buck was quartering away. He only went 15 or 20 yards.
