I need a scope for my 223 Ackley. I think I have narrowed it down between a Nikon Monarch 3 4-16x42 Side Focus BDC or a Vortex Diamondback HP 3-12x42 Riflescope Dead-Hold BDC Reticle. I own two Vortex scopes already, a vortex HS LR and a regular Vortex HS. I like them both. I also own a Nikon Monarch with a mildot reticle but not a BDC. I honestly can't tell the difference in quality between the two and I am pleased with both. I have never looked through a diamondback though so I am not sure if their quality is as good as the HS line is.

I have both, I'd go with the Nikon, it will cost a little more.

The diamondback is definitely no equal to the Monarch. Kind of a rhetorical question I guess...

Glad to read this. I have not been impressed with any Vortex I seen at the range.

I think the quality control at vortex is going down as their sales have gone up. I'll be sending a diamondback off to Vortex this week that won't adjust right out of the box. Not what I would have said a year or 2 ago.

Monarch. Upper scale of Nikon's line. Diamondback, lower scale of Vortex line.
Monarch gets my vote.

Of the two choices put forth, Monarch all day. While I'm not a huge Nikon fan, I do have a Monarch 2.5-10 on a tang/safety Ruger and it's been flawless. Have only had one Vortex (briefly) that was already on a rifle when I bought it and found it to be inferior to VX1s and Revolutions optically. YMMV.

If you already have a couple vipers....why downgrade to the diamondback hp???
For barely a few dollars more you can just buy a viper hs or hs-lr.

My cousin has a diamondback hp. And while it's a Nice scope....he regrets buying it when he looks through my viper hs-lr. I also agree its nowhere near the quality. And I paid the same price at sportsman warehouse.

I agree with this^^^. I tried to like Vortex. I had a Crossfire, turd. I then upgraded to the Diamondback, couldn't really tell a difference. Sold it and got a Viper, and I swear, I think the Crossfire was better. My buddy bought a Viper, too, and he was so disappointed in the scope that he actually stopped by their headquarters in Wisconsin while on vacation and they told him the scope was fine and essentially told him to pound sand. I still think the Leupolds are the best "mid-priced" hunting scope. If you are looking for bargain price, I really enjoy Burris.

I would say their both equal as they both have no fault warranties. The real question is which one are you more likely to have to use the warranty on? I think we all know the answer to that!

I had diamondback and sold it. Got a monarch 2.5-10 never looked back. I have one viper and it's nice
Not sure what the hype about vortex is.
For the $$$. Nikon is better IMO. Rather have pro staff than crossfire or diamondback
Vortex is faster turn around time when it comes to warranty

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.
