Do any of you use them on your compass? Not sure what the value is.

Main value is in backcountry skiing or mountaineering to assess slope angle for avalanche hazard.

Never used one. Whenever I need to assess avalanche danger, I just pull out my get-the-hell-out-of-Dodge-o-meter.

Used clinometer extensively when I worked on an silviculture crew for slope reading. I've even used my Brunton clinometer for shooting line and grade driving "drift" tunnel in underground mine operations and projects.

One can also use an clinometer and measuring tape to determine tree heights.

They use them one precision rifles as well but they're known as angle or cosine indicators. Much the same thing as it gives the same information.

Basically the folks using these the most are folks in forest survey and perhaps geologists.

Hope this helps.

I thought they were used to tell how someone's singing compared to Patsy.

They are useful for field geological work.

I've found them to be useful a time or two, although I don't pretend the one on the Silva is worth a phuqck.
