I really think the best advice is to just take the plunge on whatever falls into your price range (buy or assemble) then shoot it enough to see what you do and don't like in an AR. Then build or buy the rifle(s) that fit your needs.

For pure accuracy, I bought a Stag model 6 (under $1000 at the time), which claims 1/2MOA with decent match ammo. Mine meets or exceeds this with 75gr developed handloads at 100yd and holds near it at 250yd. My 250yd groups are 10 shots fired in actual competition. The scope was a Weaver V-24, but that's been replaced with a Mueller 8-32x44, my second one in that flavor.

Later, I bought a CMMG 16 Bull WASP Upper ($578 shipped), and tried it with Milsurp (Federal M855 and PPU 55FMJ commercial M193 ball equivalent). It meets or exceeds Mil-Spec accuracy (2" Mean Radius at 200yd).

I am currently 'building' an economy free float Upper based on a Stag 16" M4 spec (NY target Crown) barrel that will come in at around $438. Still collecting parts, but I expect to be underway within a week or two. I expect it to meet or exceed Mil-Spec accuracy requirements, but this is a first effort and all I can really do right now is wishful thinking.

I have a varmint load that employs 26gr of Varget with various bullets of 50-55gr weights.

IMHO, 'best bang for buck' is less about buck than it is about bang.

The most important part on the AR for accuracy is the barrel. Hands down. And a bolt and chamber cut and mated IMHO.

Beyond that it'll almost always shoot as long as the barrel is good.

Rost;

I agree, and that's why I suggest the [color:#339999]L-W AR Match barrels[/color]. They come with installed and matched extensions and bolts.

I am very new here and haven't found the Campfire Challenge info. Could you please enlighten me? Also, please bear in mind that I'm a geezer and may not be anywhere near as good a marksman as many others here.

That looks like fun.

It may take me some time to arrange the activity.

I have a prewar Garand (09/41) and a Mossberg M44 for the irons (can rimfire be fired at 50yd?). The Garand has been modified with a globe front sight and glass bedded.

The delays are associated with washed out entry bridge at our local range, and my Wife's recent (2nd) hip replacement recovery.

OK, OK, I give...

I am not unacquainted with ranges and competitive shooting, but I thought the Geezer Gambit could be worth a try...

Shaq- I had no desire for an AR until recently. I got bored for a bit and looked at a few and then Palmetto had the Freedom rifle kit with SS barrel for $399 couldn't resist.
Remember I had even picked one up before three weeks ago....

Friend had a SSA stripped lower for $70, a Burris PEPR mount and two mags for $50.
Complete SS barreled rifle ready for a scope for $519. Threw on a 4.5-14x44 Target mil-dot Conquest. Trigger felt crappy so gave it the 15 minute trigger job which helped a ton. Hope it goes bang as I am heading to the range early!!!

Just do it...

If I was in the market for a reasonable quality brand name complete rifle I would probably contact Pete at this website:

http://ar15sales.com/

and order a Stag or RRA. They offer models to fit your budget. Personally I would get the three gun STAG but it's over the OP's budget.

My 'economy build' parts are all in and a dry run indicates that they fit together very nicely. My goal is a run-n-gun upper mated to a Stag Model 6 lower equipped with the Thordsen NY SAFE compliant stock. Once getting used to it, I rather like the Thordsen stock.

All the parts came from Amazon, except for the barrel, which was ordered direct from Stag.

The build centers around the Stag 'NY crowned' 16: 1:9" M4 barrel that appears to be the one used in the NY-compliant Model 3TH-M Upper. I have a Vortex S.P.A.R.C. set aside for this Upper.

Assembly will commence as soon as I can clear my agenda.

RRA makes a good quality firearm but they are not cheap. I have a Lar 15 with a 16 inch barrel and have shot groups under two inches at 300 yards.
