I was looking to set up a backup elk rifle almost identical to my 7STW. Found a Rem 700 with a 26" Lilja sporter chambered in 300H&H. Anyone running the 30Super for elk? I was thinking of running 180 accubonds. Would you leave the barrel at 26", or chop it to 22" or 24"?

Case capacity and ballistics wise the question is equivalent to asking if anyone is using the 300 WSM for elk.

Allowing for that I'm pretty sure the answer is yes.

I hunted elk for years with a pre-64 M-70 in 300 H&H with a 24 inch barrel, it was an elk killing machine. I suspect you will get some replies that an '06 will kill just as well - which it will, but with handloads the 300 H&H still has an edge.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

I wasn't asking if it was OK. Just asking about people's experiences to get a conversation going about the 300H&H. I don't see it mentioned much.

I have a pre-64 M70 and a Ruger No. 1S in 300 H&H. The one elk I've shot with the 300 H&H was with a Hornady 180 SP in a different No. 1 that I no longer have. I mostly shoot 200 Partitions in them these days.

I have a number one in .300 H & H.. I have had 700's, 721's and model 70's.. All with 26 in barrels.. It is a great caliber.. Personally, I would stick with the 26" barrel.. It is my favorite length for most of my hunting rifles.. the original .300's had 26 in tubes.. Mostly I have been shooting 165's for elk or 200 gr. part. depending on the hunt..
Great caliber.. Enjoy..

Good enough for kudu, so yes on elk. Keep the length for maximum speed at distance. My 721 has 25" or so and I can get 2800 fps using 180-grainers without pushing things.

Well, there you have it - the cool factor sucked out of yet another chambering. grin grin

There is a certain elan with the 300 H&H. If it makes your socks go up and down, have at it.

Nothing feeds as smooth as the 300 H&H and I think the word uber first came out of someones mouth when they looked at the 300 H&H cartridge.

Sounds like an excellent combonation, I didn't conect with an elk but I've shot a mule deer with the H&H and 180 NPT. I think you're okay, I wouldn't shorten the barrel. Just hunt it and enjoy.

For many years my 300 H&H was my only big game rifle. My first one was a Remington 721 that was one of the most accurate rifles I've ever owned. I shot a lot of deer and several elk with it. coming into a small windfall and longing for a left handed version, I had Remingtons Custom Shop chamber one of their left handed KS Mountain Rifles in 300 H&H. It has been every bit as accurate as the 721 and has piled up a lot of deer and elk.

Since moving to Alaska, it has one caribou to it's credit. My current affair with the 35 and 400 Whelen has it benched most of the time. I have a goat hunt coming up next month and I was thinking of taking the 400 but now I'm wavering and may drag out the 300 H&H. It's a lot lighter than the 400 so it may get the nod.

I wouldn't shorten the barrel any. I've never felt hampered by a 24 or 26 inch barrel. I'd leave it 26 inches.

I ran a lot of 165 and 180 grain Partitions through mine for deer and elk. They are great bullets and I never had a failure. I found a great deal on a bunch of 220 grain Partitions shortly after moving up here and have been loading them in the 300. The one caribou taken with them was mightily impressed. You could look far and wide and have a tough time coming up with a better combination than the 300 H&H and a 180 grain Nosler Partition.

Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

Nice 'bou and elk you killed with the .300 H&H.

Had a Push-feed M 70 in .300 H&H. cool

Then I traded it for something else. frown

Should've kept it.

Elk: the one you just got about a year ago?
