You guys still shooting gophers?? Grass is kind of high this time of year, but we are getting quite a few in pastures.. Shooting might be good when the hay is cut near the pivots.. Our shooting is pretty much over by Aug. 1..

Grass too high here, but if you are on hand right after the first cutting, it can be good...seems they shut off about noon due to the heat though.

I had a dynamite Saturday two weeks back but about half the pasture was borderline worthless due to grass height.
I wouldn't bother going today. Depending on the field/pasture of course.

I'm still getting a few, early in the AM, but they are mostly down for the season. The County has mowed our ditches, so that helps. I usually hunt in pastureland that has little grass anyway.
I had a good Spring though, shot nearly 1000. Since we got the plague 6-8 years ago -- that's my best count.

The plague has really hurt our gopher numbers, and the purchase of ranches by out of state people who immediately shut the hunting and fishing down.. Lucky there are still some family ranches left, and the gophers seem to be rebounding..

WyoCoyoteHunter,
Tons of gophers here this year also, the wet must have really helped a lot because we have also had a wet year. Ours are down by mid-July usually but as hot as it is now they may head down sooner.
I just left your part of the country a week ago after spending two weeks of PD shooting. As you say the grass is a bit high but it is a great year for the ranchers and the PD's were thick where we hunt. I started seeing PD's near Kemmerer in places where I had not seen them previously.

223 Rem, my favorite cartridge - you can't argue with truckloads of dead PD's and gophers.

Glad you had a good shoot.. Nice to hear the dogs are coming back also.. this morn. the dogs and I took a ride, but got a late start due to projects I had to finish.. Took and old road I haven't traveled this spring, and found a bunch of young p.dogs..
Used my CZ .22 mag. and shot 60 in a rather short time.. As you said the grass made shooting tougher.. But it was fun.. Will hit that area a couple more times.. But must leave lots for seed..
I suppose you had your .223's.. I'll get mine and my bigger center fires out next week, when I start shooting dogs seriously.. My goldens will have to stay home do to shooting centerfire rifles..
I am hoping to get some more gopher shooting in once the hay is mowed.. Found a new spot, with 4 center pivots.. Usually, that is a haven for gophers.. They stay old a bit longer due to green grass.. Our are usually down my Aug. 1st.. Have great summer.

We've had some cooler weather and I've gone out 3 times in the last week. Got 83 total. Bought a "Gopher Counter" to keep me honest.
