Ever since I first heard about these I thought they were just as slick as could be. Pricey, though. Never could justify the expense for me and my needs.

I'd be looking at $1200-$1500 from my friend

I would look at the rifle and then, circumstances permitting, decide. But I would tend towards buying it. If it's in any kind of good condition the price seems good, at least to me. Take it apart (break it down) a time or two and check for any wear. I have been told -- NO experience personally-- that the design can wear a bit. I don't know if there is any way to adjust for that.

You might want to fire a Marlin Guide Gun .45-70 with hot loads before committing to a guide gun with power between a .45-70 and a .45-90.
If you like the beating given by a light rifle with heavy loads, this may be just the thing for you.

It's a unique firearm with two-cartridge capability. Many nice features. And Shooting the 45/70 gives it good resale. I can tell you that the stock Marlin lever gun shooting Buffalo Bore level of power cartridges in 45/70 is memorable.

It would have application in the timber or oak brush for elk and on a stand over bait for bear.

Here are some details of the ine I bought yesterday:

- Marlin 1895G .45-70 #00038874
- Cabela's Alaska Guide 2-7x32 riflescope
- Leupold 1 piece base and rings
- 29 Hornady 325gr LEVERevolution
- 20 Winchester 300gr Partition
- 15 PMC 405gr lead flat point
- XS Sight Systems Scout Mount (for forward-mounted scope)

I am still interested in the WWG and will keep you guys updated

The WWG offers a couple of things.. You can shoot a dinosaur cartridge (sort of-- see the Jurassic movie) in the 457, and the takedown feature. The first you probably can do without as the 45-70 is a good cartridge by itself. The takedown feature is pretty nifty if you like that sort of capability.

Also there is the weather resistant finish of the WWG. (If it has that).
