I ran across one of these the other day, when I stopped at a pawn shop in SW Virginia. Guy had it marked $850. I worked him down to $750, but did not know enough about the little rifle to get me to finish the deal.
Laminated stock, almost mint. It has that goofy vent rib on the barrel.
Was that a decent deal? What about the caliber?

673 or 763?

673, it's a Remington M7 in a laminated stock with a vent rib. I'd not pay $750 for one. The 6.5 RM is a nifty round.

I saw one of those at Wallyworld in Wytheville years go. It could be the same one.

I think that the 673 is a particularly unattractive rifle and the ergs of the stock don't work particularly well for me, so any amount of $$ greater than the value of the action, to use as a donor, would be too much.

The 6.5 Rem Mag is a nice cartridge, but you can quickly run into COAL issues with bullets over 129/130 grains in a short action. The original Remington/Peters factory loads were 100 and 120 grains in order to work in the 600/660.

Mine is SO ugly I have taken a likin' to it, just ask RAS. All my other rifles are classic style.

The tip on COAL was probably the best thought. I would like to use heavier bullets, and in looking at the cartridge online, the short action, and the over all length issue is a deal killer.

Marc, the clerk in the Rural Retreat pawn shop did say the rifle was local bought, so you may well be right.

I remember it because it was so uncommon. When we had a WM here they had a SS Browning 375, somebody ordered it and never picked it up.

I like the cartridge but not in that action. The action is just too short to be of any use. On a regular short action Rem you can put a Wyatt box on it and load out to 3" or so and use 140's. I have mine on a tang safety Ruger long action and like it a lot.

That's why the LGS I bought some 6.5Remg brass from for a another guy, had some vintage box's of RP/WW 100gr & 120gr boolits. I bought all 3 bx's of the RP 120gr'ers for my T3 260 at under new Speer 120gr prices - been using Sierra 120PH's as a 1st choice , but have been hesitant on the mostly WW 100gr'ers to use on mgmt Wtails & hogs down here.

Another guy I read down here has AI'd his 260 to get +/- RMg MV's...and I'm beginning to pay attention.

I use Sierra Matchkings 123 gr in my 6.5 RM and get about 3275 with RL-22,a Nosler book load.

I would really doubt an AI'd 260 will run that fast with any sort of sub-65k psi pressure. Check your buddies loads thru Quick Load and see what sort of pressures he is running after you chrono some. The case capacity of the 6.5 Rem is the largest of any 6.5 except for get the 264 Win. Case capacity wins the velocity game at safe pressures.

Doc, Now that I think about it, after your post, I am wrong on his caliber, he's AI'd a 7-08...my mistake.

Not to hijack the thread...but this brings up a ?? I've never asked anywhere...I know now 6.5RMg brass is not easy to find, as the stuff I found in my LGS was the 1st I've seen in decades and was just a small batch that came out of an estate...and like you said the 264WMg is the next best alternative with brass still available usually, or necked down 7RMg stuff...but what about doing a 6.5WSM 24" barrel instead of the WMgs's 26" barrel and resolve the scarcity of brass issue in a M70's SA magnum action, in a WSM instead of SAUM because of the same lack of brass problem??

The ?? comes from picking up a cherry 7 digit Fwt 300WSM really cheap that's been hiding in the safe for too long and just before getting put 1st and Center over the next 60-90 days to see if it'll earn it's keep with no drama or need to be rehabbed with a new barrel/caliber - or go down the road - & what to put in it that'd be the least amount of $$'s & hassle....the 6.5Rmg was my initial thought until I could not find any brass.

I have several hundred brass that I bought when I had the gun built. I also have a set of RCBS form dies (2) that make the brass from 7 Rem, 264 Win., or .338. So far I haven't had any problem making brass from 7 Rem. Push back the shoulder in 2 steps and cut off the excess and anneal.

Thank you for that info about the RCBS die set, I was unaware that 7Rmg brass, and the others mentioned, could be used to form 6.5Rmg brass. It opens a new and interesting avenue for using a SA Mag action. 7Rmg brass is common enough that finding it will never be a problem.

I used to hear about Charlie? Sisk from Dayton TX and the 6.5WSM idea but not so much in the last year or so.

I have one of these and love it. I bought it new for about 400 or so.I use the 120 sierra pro hunter at about 3200 fps. I shot a 2 inch ten shot group at 300 yds to check for consistency. Good enough for me. Shoots better with the rib than without. ED K
