Any ideas as to age? Receipt says 75 or 79. Im not sure if box and grips are original.

N637138 (if I'm reading the receipt right) would put it in 1979.
Box looks to be from the correct period. End label on box?

Sweet! Looks practically new. Not a huge fan of the N-Frame .357s (once the 19 came out, they really should have dropped them from their catalogue), but they are very nice guns, and real classics. The prices on these are only going up. Will make a good investment, along with a fun and useful sporting arm, if you don't mind the extra weight. The hottest loads will feel like target wadcutters in that gun.

If I'm reading that receipt correctly and you got that thing for $324.50 + tax, you stole it. You could probably triple your money on it by tomorrow if so inclined. Personally, I shoot the heck out of it though.

Beautiful gun and my favorite of the S&W 357's.

The Model 27 Smith is the best 357 Magnum ever produced with the 686 running it a close second

Got a model 27 from that era with the 5" barrel. LOVE it. Came in an exhibition box that I have as well.

Typically those guns came in a Mahogany Presentation Case. That might be the original box, but it looks a decade or so older than the gun to me.

My 3 1/2" came in the blue box with the box being numbered with the gun. Still have it.

They really went up in a few years. I gave $200-ish for mine in '73 from Betts Hardware in Des Moines, IA. Same exact gun, only I had to buy my target grips and had a 'Smith install a red insert.

Nice gun. You'll love it.

My first Smith was a 6" Highway Patrolman. I don't shoot it much at all it seems but I just can't seem to bring myself to sell it or the 45 Model of 1989 Model 25 5" either.

Nice Buy.

TheWarrior: Wow, what a great find for you.
Interesting photos and stuff with it - seems like the sales tax in kalifornicopia even back in 1979 was high (at 7%!).
If that pistol were mine (and sadly it isn't!) I would NOT shoot it - I would admire and be proud of it and let it appreciate in value.
You want to shoot a 357 then go buy a Ruger and blast away with it.
My Model 27-2 Smith has serial number = N46361X- anyone have a date for that one?
Enjoy your fine, handsome and sturdy revolver.

EthanEdwards: My "supposedly" (but looks to be) unfired Model 27 is indeed encased in a presentation box.
I got it from a private estate kind of thing - so not much known on its history other than the sales pitch with it was it being "unfired".
Was the presentation case for Model 27's "an option" or could that case have been bought separately?
I know that one of my Model 29's I bought new back in 1971'ish came in a presentation case - its still in there and IT is still unfired.
Thanks in advance if any insights into my question are proffered.

Especially considering they only made 2,000 of that model! grin

I will not ever get rid of mine!

I know that Evil Twin has one, and I also know of one that was destroyed by an ignoramus that thought it would make a great snubbie.....so that only leaves 1,997 possibly roaming the earth! grin

Good luck finding one!
