I'm looking for input on these 2 guns only. For those of you that have shot both the Glock 17 and the full size S&W M&P 9mm, which do you prefer and why?

I prefer the M&P because of the ergonomics and the grip angle. The Glock is a good pistol, it just has never felt right in the hand to me. Go handle them both and see what feels better to you. Better yet shoot them both.
If you have been a 1911 guy like me, the M&P grip angle is much closer to that that the Glock. Plus if you are so inclined, the M&P can be had with a thumb safety.

The two guns are so close that it really comes down to exactly what MarkinGA said, ergonomics and grip angle. And that's why I bought the M&P...but I still have a hankerin for a G19...someday.

Trigger is better on the M&P but reliability goes to Glock.

Personally I am not a big fan of the M&P and carry one daily at work. I would much rather have a Glock. Glock triggers can be made to be quite good by someone who knows what they are doing. So can the mushy M&P triggers too in all fairness. Personal preference, but I choose Glock every time. It has proven itself to me in a variety on austere environments, even when completely covered in fine, silt like dust, the Glocks have proven to be extremely reliable.

Glock with a properly tuned trigger. And I don't think a Glock can be beat for out of the box reliability, either.

I have not used either enough to comment on long-term reliability. For ergos I prefer the M&P. I am generally a 1911 fan so maybe there is something to that. I know folks that use them a lot that swear by each so I think it probably comes down to personal comfort more than anything.

Glock by mile. I've shot both a lot, and carried both at work. The ergonomics of the M&P might feel better at the gun counter, but I consistently shoot Glocks of every flavor better. For me the trigger pull, trigger shape itself, and grip angle are much more important factors than an uber contoured exterior.
Glock's clockwork is dirt simple also, which is definitely not the case with the M&P. Glock strikers are at rest when the trigger is fully forward, while M&P strikers hang on their sear waiting to be released. The striker block safety should keep the gun from firing unintentionally, but I appreciate the additional margin of safety with Glocks. And while a tweaked Glock trigger is great, I've never run across a truly bad one in stock form. I met more than a few bad factory M&P triggers however.
Plenty of folks seem to love their M&Ps, and you might be one of them. I'll choose Glock every time, and only carry an M&P because I have to.

I can't compare the two, but will offer some Glock experience. I've had my G17 Gen2 for over 20 years now and it is my main everyday carry piece, country or in town. The grip always felt a little bulky, and natural pointing put the front sight too high. I went to work on it with sandpaper a few years ago, and now it feels perfect. I sanded off the lower hump on the back of the grip, and rounded off the corners on the front. Now it feels very natural in the hand, and the sights are level on a natural point.

Glock 17 for me, I don't feel up my guns and do don't give a chit about ergonomics. If Kevin and Mas Adoobie like the M&P, you know your on the right track with the Glock.

Touche' As far as ergos go, I don't have a problem with Glocks at all. They point MUCH better for me, and I can lock my wrist while shooting them.............definitely not the case with M&Ps. IMO they look less ergonomic than they actually are, and I couldn't give a schit less for M&P's cute scallops and textures which do nothing to address how much the trigger sucks or how it doesn't point and track as nicely as a Block. OK, rant over I think.

I am issued a Glock...yet chose to purchase my own M&P. Our dept is approximately 50% Glock, 50% other, with the M&P making up a large portion of that remainder.
The Glocks work just fine, but they are not the panacea of reliability many claim. I see as many failures with them as anything else...I chose the M&P because I simply like and shoot it better. If forced to carry the issue Glock, I dont think I would cry about it, as its just a tool. If I am spending my money, however, its not on a Glock.

I prefer the Glock 19 over the 17 and prefer the full size M&P in the 9mm . I have both, but carry the Glock 19, 23 or 32 90% of the time.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

I have both S&W's & Glocks & I prefer the Glock; my triggers are worked or just fine for not much money. Takes a fair amount more money to get the S&W triggers right or to an equal status.
My wife is just the opposite; she prefers the S&W's & that's mainly why I have a couple of them, a full size & a compact.
As far as the G17 specifically goes, it's a great gun but a little too big to suit me for EDC concealed carry, so it's a 19 or a 23 for that purpose, but if I was to carry OWB & not be concerned about concealment, then it would be the 17.
Someone earlier commented about the S&W feeling like a 1911............I'm a dyed in the wool 1911 guy &, IMO, about the only thing the feel of the S&W M&P & a 1911 have in common is that they are both pistols.

My Glocks have a grip angle EXACTLY the same as a 1911, because I made them that way. Cost me about ten bucks.
