I'm looking at the VX-6 2-12X42 CDS Fire-Dot Wind-Plex

With the power setting at 2-12, I was wondering about Parallax?

Anyone know of any problems with this scope?

Has anyone seen the Wind-Plex first hand.

Haven't seen the wind plex, but I do own and use the 2-12x w/regular duplex and CDS. I've had no parallax issues at any setting out to 900 yards or so. It is a fantastic package.

Parallax is not an issue with the 2-12x - though my vast experience with the VX6/2-12 is a sample of one.

With all Leupold flavors, I've never experience anything wonky until one gets passed 12x. Then I'd want SF.

If you have any concerns about it, it may not be a bad idea to move to the 3-18 for the SF. But then you've got a wee larger scope and $100 less in your pocket.

Thanks Scott, I don't have any concerns. I was really looking for reassurance about the 2-12X I'm sure there will be no issue with parallax. I really don't need the Wind-Plex, a standard Duplex will be fine.

I've got a VX-6 3-18x42mm with the Illuminated Fire Dot Wind Plex reticle and I love it. I've shot it out to 800 yds and it works very well on crop damage deer. Rifle is a M700 LSS in 338 RUM.

One of the most frustrating things for me is to pay $1000 for a rifle scope and when zeroing it dial 6 1/4 MOA clicks and get 10, reverse dial 6 and get 8 etc. Then many believe that above 10X you should have parallax adjustment.

I think in the end you might like one of these for a variety of reasons.

I like the VX-6 2-12. I've not had parallax issues. When you move up to the 3-18, you do pick up some weight.

The big Nightforce type scopes are tough, but heavy. So, you gotta determine what you want. To me, the 2-12 is a compromise, but represents one of the best all around hunting scope buys. For a dedicated LR hunting rifle, where weight isn't an issue, one of the big, heavy target scopes may be what you want. Just how portable does this rig need to be?

VX-6 glass holds its own with the Alpha Euros. Even though it's 30mm, it's rather sleek. Did I say I like mine. It now wears Alumina Fold Back lens covers, which are much nicer that Butler Creek, although a good bit more expensive.

I like mine as well. Standard duplex, no CDS.

But, you can add a CDS to that model. You probably have a coupon in the box.

Tikka 695 7RemMag with 2-12x42 VX6, wearing alumina's and a CDS. This combo has proven tough as nails.

2-12X CDS Fire-Dot Duplex

I have a VX-6 with and one without the Fire-Dot.

The Leupold lifetime warranty does not apply to electronic parts. IIRC, that warranty is two years.

Hopefully if work is needed on electronic components, it won't be too expensive.

They did a good job with the dot. You can't tell it's there when turned off, looks just like a std. duplex. You can adjust the brightness and the thing shuts down with non movement to preserve battery power. It lights up when you pick up the gun, triggered by motion. Pretty neat.

JG posted up some pics of the FireDot I believe next to a Conquest Z-Plex and the FD looked like it would be great in low light.

Still wish all these guys would make the thicker outter posts come closer to the intersection of the crosshairs. My Leica ER LeicaPlex suffers from the same thing as the VX6 and FireDot apparently do.

It is. IMO, the best thing going for low light.

And, high quality glass helps in low light.

I've disliked every lighted reticle I've looked at/used. I don't imagine that changing.

JG thanks for the pictures. The fire-dot should be fine, I have always been somewhat skeptical of things like this. Must be too much old school in me. lol
The scope should be great. I'll be putting it on my 300 Win Mag.

I don't like lighted reticles that disappear when the battery goes out. I think NF may have some like that.

At least this one is a great duplex even with the power off. And, to me the VX-6 duplex is one of the best.

I've been thinking about giving a 2-12x a whirl as I've heard nothing but good about them.

Then I realize it will probably be left at 6x most of the time, so I just buy another 6x....

No problem Hammer, and I totally agree with DF. It's a fantastic duplex reticle anyway, even without firedot illuminated. I can see it waaay past legal light, like about the time this big boy came out....

If Leica had an illuminated reticle like the FireDot it would be killer in low light with the combination of the optics in that Leica scope. When folks say you don't need that level of glass in a riflescope, that must be the scope they are referring to. I've never seen a scope that bright, sharp and clear. On the other hand, the quality of the glass there helps the LeicaPlex go further than it should in low light compared to just having good optics.

That's what I've been saying about that Firefly reticle in that it works great w/o being fired up cause it's so bold. Most people looked at it as a "gimmick" and it's popularity died off quickly because of it. If you can't see that reticle in low light it's either to dark to shoot or you need an eye exam.

Since Leica USA is in your backyard, why don't you go throw your weight around and get them to listen??????? I could put that on my new LAW.....!

I have a 3-18x44 cds firedot and love it. Probably my favorite hunting scope.

The problem I've had with more than a few illuminated reticles isn't that I can't see the reticle, it's that it's all that I can see.

It's not Leica USA that's the problem. It's the guys across the pond that think they know more than the guys here that are buying them . Like they say, you can always tell a German, but you can't tell them much.

With regards to the firedot, there's a setting so dim you can't even tell it's on until past dark-thirty.

I suppose I can look it up, but since you're here, how to you operate the illumination function on the VX-6?

You just keep hitting the button, causing the dot to dim. Stop when it's right.

I would think the Fire Dot is the same. VX-6 glass is better than VX-R glass. The VX-R is a great scope.

VX-R is a great scope, I shot a doe at around 150 yards in a beanfield with 3-9x40 and it was all the scope I needed. I don't like the short mounting tube for use on a long action though.

Steelhead. In last light on the lowest setting there is zero washout or starburst of any kind. Like JG said, u don't know its on till its damn near dark.

Roy, that sounds good to me.

The duplex will work great in dark timber or the open area.

The VX-6 duplex is really good. I don't think you'd need the Fire Dot until it was pretty dark.

Like I say to folks who like fixed power scopes.....better to have it and not need it (higher and lower power settings), than to need it and not have it.

I like 2X for quick shots, 12X for work at the range. I hardly every need 12X hunting.

Leupold salesmen out in force

Now that my Montana has a good barrel, I'm thinking about replacing the vx-3 2.5-8x36 with a VX-6 2-12x42. According to Loopey it's about 6 oz heavier. I'm wondering if anyone has mounted that scope on a light short action like the Montana, and how they liked the setup.

That's why I only hunt with a 378 Wthby.

Not on a short action, but I did on my Montana 84L.

I think it depends on how light you want that light rifle to be.

As much as I like the VX-6 2-12x42, I don't think of it as ideal for a really LW rifle.

I'd think about a Z-3 3-9x38 at 12 oz., or stay with the VX-3 2.5-8x36.
