have had a Whirlpool roll-around for 17 years with minimal problems, all caused by hard water and easily fixed. Are having the kitchen totally redone in the next couple of weeks and of course a new built-in will be part of the deal. Am looking forward to it like a root canal, but there it is.

Somebody once described a dishwasher as a waterproof box to contain hot spraying water, but it can be more complicated.

Ours is a Jenn-air which was already in the house 14yrs ago when we bought the house. I don't know if it's a good one or not, but the dishes come out clean, and I don't have to hand wash, so win-win I think.

We were thinking about replacing our 22 year old dishwasher and my BIL who is a plumbing contractor advised us not to. He told us that as long as our current unit was working to keep it as any currently avialable were not as good nor as durable. He works on some pretty high end home where he installs the costliest units so he should know. Truthfully I am amazed at the longevity of our current dishwasher, while on the noisy side it works well and doesn't leak. The wife has repaired the plastic silverware basket and the vinyl coating on the racks is beginning to wear thru. Guess I'll look into replacing these items.

Have you heard an ASKO? I have had Bosch's and my ASKO is quieter.

Bosch is not what it used to be, especially in customer no service. Kitchenaid is where it's at these days.

I've had one Miele, and it doesn't suck. Very quiet.

+1 on the Bosch. A coworker introduced me to them years ago. Said he was visiting some friends and told them their dishwasher was broke because the cycle light was on but nothing was happening. They told him him- no, it is running, it is just super quiet. He went out and bought himself one and when my old one sprung I decided to give one a try. Glad I did. Ours is 7-8 years old and just as quiet as the day we bought it. Cleans much better than any other I have owned too.

Oh, one other tip. If you have a stainless steel sink basically it acts as a giant speaker. Change it for porcelain and your dw drain and especially the garbage disposal become so much more palatable.

Our current one is a GE and I am not impressed. Last house had an LG and it did a great job and was very quiet. IME, they all get the dishes sufficiently clean, but the noise level is not similar. My next one will be the quiestest I can afford. Current one is way too loud. I also want one with a timer.

Anything but GE.

Kitchenaid is pretty hard to beat and Bosch is a good one as well.

Actually no, I'm not familiar with that brand but sounds intriguing.

We are building a home and the appliance package we chose is Kitchen Aid. We currently use a Kitchen Aid dishwasher. It is extremely quiet. Interestingly, the top rack can raise and lower in order to accommodate taller items. It has a 3rd rack on top for silverware.
We did discover something that is inherent in all new dishwashers (I'm told) and that is you want to use a product called "jet dry" in order to ensure your dishes come out completely dry. There is a compartment in the door that holds enough liquid for a week or so of use. It's a blue liquid and ensures your dishes come out dry. We are told it is a function of the new "energy efficient" dishwashers...
whatever it is, when we don't use it, we have to dry items that should already be dry. When we use it, we don't.
