I have been offered a Ruger M77 tang safety ultra lite in 250 Savage. Anyone here shooting the Ruger Ultra Lite? What are your thoughts on this rifle?

Great little rifle. I had a .308 for a while that's on my "What was I thinking when I sold that?" list. Not always tack-drivers, but wonderful hunting rifles.

Unless the seller has it jacked way up, buy it.

Tang safety Ruger 77 RLs in 250-3000 are easy to sell and usually command a higher price than 77 RLs chambered for most other cartridges. If the price and condition are in sync, I'd consider buying it. The Rugers have 1-10" ROT barrels, so you can shoot heavier bullets if you want to.

I had a Ruger 77 tang safety 250, NIB. Sent it to Lone Wolf in Montana for a lightweight stock and carried it alot. Killed one bear with it. Super nice to carry, but as mentioned could never get it to shoot real well, just ok.
Had another Ruger 77 250 rechambered to AI, and same deal, never shot real good, just ok. Did kill stuff, but let them both go due to ho hum accuracy.

Since I answered this more fully on "another forum" I'll not repeat the whole thing here.

As I summarized though, watching our youngest daughter take that many deer with a single shot each time changed my opinion of what was a suitable deer round.

If you can get the little Ruger to shoot it will be a gem.

I really like the Ruger rifles and the .250-3000 round. Accuracy can be a problem with some rifles, but this can usually be solved with enough work and experimenting.

The .250 is a fine deer rifle, but is a lightweight. Most any chambering from .243 on up can work.....if the shooter is good enough, but the .250 just doesn't have a lot of margin in some situations.

If you own other rifles or accept the limitations of a light rifle the .250-3000 is OK, but there are much better choices for an all-around rifle for any and all situations.

Helped a friend sight in his Ruger UL and could not believe the accuracy. It clover leafed nice little 1/2" 3 shot groups at 100 yards with standard Remington Yello and Green box ammo.

I had a 77 RSI in 250 savage. It was a great little rifle .alas I never shot anything but groundhogs with it as the deer were so intimidated none would show up when I was carrying it. I will say while ammo is available for it reloading will be your friend. Reloading for mine was easy and it shot most loads quite well.. Having said all that it won't do anything you can't do with a 243.

I never lost a deer when using the .250/3000 out of different platforms but, became disenchanted with it. The only time it put deer down fast was when hit in the CNS but, when placed in the heart/lungs sometimes they didn't even flinch. The last straw was November 2000 on an 8 point when I shot him facing me. He just stood there a few seconds, then trotted about 25 yards to my right and turned to face the way he came. I chambered another round in my 700 Classic, which was an absolute tack driver, and put another 100 grain Hornady SP into his left shoulder. He just stood there bleeding from the nose. Thinking I'd missed, I put another in him at which point he took a couple of steps and lay down behind a pine sapling while keeping his head up. I was getting ready to put one in his head when it fell over. I recovered part of one shoulder but, had to discard the other.

Little cartridges do better on deer with little bullets going as fast as you can push them.

In 2012 I got this mule buck with a Nosler Ballistic tip 115 gr .257 bullet from a rimmed wildcat I built. It was bang flop, broke the shoulder.

That buck was so big, his nose drug on the floor at the butcher's shop. They told me only Elk do that. They would not believe I got him into my vehicle by myself. I used ropes.

My current 250 Sav rifle has too slow a twist for that bullet.
But I have the 250 Sav reamer and I am going to build a rifle that can stabilize that 115 gr bullet.
