The Obama administration is preparing to release convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard from prison, according to U.S. officials, some of whom hope the move will smooth relations with Israel in the wake of the Iran nuclear deal.

Such a decision would end a decadeslong fight over Mr. Pollard, who was arrested on charges of spying for Israel in 1985 and later sentenced to life in prison. The case has long been a source of tension between the U.S. and Israel, which has argued that a life sentence for spying on behalf of a close U.S. partner is too harsh. Israel has for years sought Mr. Pollard’s early release, only to be rejected by the U.S.

Now, some U.S. officials are pushing for Mr. Pollard’s release in a matter of weeks. Others expect it could take months, possibly until his parole consideration date in November.

A parole hearing for Mr. Pollard was held in early July. Mr. Pollard’s lawyer, Eliot Lauer, said he hasn’t heard from the parole commission “and I would expect that either I or my client would be the ones who would be notified.’’ That hearing would have been the moment for the U.S. to object to Mr. Pollard’s pending release. Mr. Lauer wouldn’t say if the government raised objections.

Some U.S. officials strongly denied Friday there was any link between the Iran deal and Mr. Pollard’s prospective release, saying that any decision would be made by the U.S. Parole Commission.

Pollard should have been executed or sentenced to life without parole, but under his sentencing in the '80's, he is eligible for parole unless he (1) misbehaves in prison or, (2) is likely to commit additional crimes - neither of which is likely.

Regardless of any Presidential action, he is most likely to be released anyway - it's the law.

Israel has killed more American military personnel in the past 50 years than North Korea (USS Liberty attack) and should not be given preferred treatment under any circumstances. I don't like it that Pollard (an Israeli citizen and hero) will be released and go to Israel to a hero's welcome.

I'm half Jewish, but this is flat wrong.
Pollard is a traitor.
We can't get four hostages out of Iran, but by golly, to placate Israel over an abysmally stupid "treaty" they're gonna toss him Pollard?
Instead of Kerry for SOS, we'd be better off hiring an Easter Island statue to take his place.

I believe it will be seen as a sign of weakness, which it is.

Obama could release him at any time, by granting executive clemency.. He would not have to wait for a parole hearing.
Having said that, I doubt that letting Pollard go would ease Israels anxiety over one of Israels greatest enemies being green lighted for nuclear weapons, likely to be first used against them.
No equivalency there.
Obama could care less if Israel is pissed.

well, it's a done deal. Pollard has been set free. Hopefully, he will die before he gets back to Israel.

Jonathan Pollard, the incarcerated Israeli agent convicted by the US of spying for Israel, is set to be released from jail on November 20 or 21 following a decision by the US Parole Commission.

Pollard's attorney said that he must remain in the US for five years under the parole ruling, but US Preisdent Barack Obama has the power to allow him to move to Israel sooner.

Responding to the news, Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel (Bayit Yehudi) gave a traditional prayer of thanks and said "after 30 years too many, the moment has arrived."

"I wish all the best for Jonathan and his family on his upcoming release and am looking forward to see him land in Israel," he said.
Successive Israeli governments have appealed for Pollard's release, which would be hugely popular in Israel, but US presidents have always resisted.

Pollard, 60, was convicted in 1987 of spying for Israel and sentenced to a life term.

Former United States secretary of defense Donald Rumsfeld stated on Monday that releasing Jonathan Pollard is a bad idea, following rumors regarding the possibility that he would be released.

"Releasing Pollard was a bad idea in 1998 and 2001. It is not a better idea today," Rumsfeld posted on Twitter, along with a copy of letters stating his opposition to the move, which he sent to former US presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush while serving as secretary of defense.

While in prison, Pollard's health has deteriorated, leading him to need surgery in March 2014 due to the malfunctioning of his kidneys, gall bladder, and intestines. He was most recently hospitalized last December after losing consciousness.

Pollard is not an Israeli citizen as one might think, but rather was given Israeli Citizenship as a means to gain his release back in 95... he's a U.S. born traitor just as is Snowden and those that want to travel to Iraq and join ISIS troops. Hell even his parents are U.S. born. One might think that he was given citizenship the same way we gave it to Oppenheimer and quite a few others... we wanted something in return!

Big freakin mistake!!!!
