I have wanted one for the longest time. Something I can hunt with, without worrying about getting dings or scratches. Not looking for a safe queen. I guess the other option is to find a 300 or 308 and have it rechambered. Any recommendations?

I've seen JES reboring sell one or two a year on GB that they made up for around $500. They're in Cottage Grove Oregon. You might call them. That'd be the cheapest way into a shooter 358.

While I have taken game with my .358 99 since 1966 I could have done it with some other rifle and cartridge and have done so.

The 99 is an excellent big game rifle. They made a million of them, twice as many as the vaunted M70!

I see 99's in 300 Savage around at shops for about $400. Consider one of those that's drilled and tapped for a top mounted scope and use it as is, so chambered.

I saw the 358,in the classifieds seconds after making this post. Beautiful gun don't know if I would take it hunting. I already have my dads 300 savage which I love and hunt with all the time. The 358 always appealed to me.

The 358's are a blast....pun intended.... grin

I love mine and have since talked my son, nephew and brother into 358's.
They are all JES rebores. They shoot nicely.

The last couple were 3 week turnaround times.

I have a 99 F 358 win done by Jes and I really like it, it started out as a 300. It was 257.00 to rebore and ship both ways.

While I have more than one .358 W. I was told a guy in NW CT has ten of them!

Too bad we can only easily carry one rifle at a time!

Ours have all fed reliably. There are 3 in our group of deer hunters.

I have a nice Pre-War 99R in 250 that could become a 358.

No, it couldn't.

Need one with serial number in the 900,000's or higher. Internals aren't right on lower serial numbers to handle the 243/308/358 length cartridges.

Calhoun, did you notice who made the above post? I think if steely was serious I'd trade him a 358 for his pre war 250 R, Joe.

I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

Nah, just re-bore the R to .35 and call it a .35-3000. smile

I noticed.. but he's a 99 shooter and not a 99 collector, so figured it'd be better to be safe and point it out. I'd like to see a pic of his prewar R though, he usually only buys nice 99's.

I though of that exact thing too.. Though I figured a better name would be the Steelie 35-3000. It's got a ring to it..

Yea, I forgot about that. I think JES does a 35/300 Savage. That might be a good route for the 250R

Good, honest rifle there - my favorite version of the early 99R with 3pt checkering and fluted comb on the buttstock. Better shape than the one I found for myself, that's for sure. If you were to do the 35-300, I'd suggest keeping the original barrel and finding a 300 Savage barrel to rebore (shouldn't be too hard, any pre-1960 300 Savage barrel would work). Prewar 99R's in 250-3000 are few and far between.

Kind of a general word of advice for any such projects: make up a cartridge(s) with the bullet(s) you plan on using, seated for flawless magazine feed, and have the smith cut the throat to accommodate it (them) rather than do it the other way around and have to phiddlephuck with a compromise if he throats it too deep.
