Why do they suck?

Anyway a 130g bullet and 56g of H4350 or a 150g and 58g of H4831SC and you're there.

If you're in any doubt about which bullet to pick, go Interlock.

Shoot some deer or pigs and see how much they suck.

One of the quickest kills I've ever seen on a deer was with a 130 Interlock from a .270. My nephew shot a buck and it went down instantly. There was blood spatter and lung material in the pine tree 10 feet behind the deer.

Here is a WAG from me- I wouldn't be too concerned about getting top velocity from the 270, either. A few years ago I went from using a 7 Mag to shoot deer to a 270 loaded to about 7/08 levels, and it seemed to me the 270 with moderate loads killed even better than the 7 Mag with max loads.
John Barsness wrote an article about that time saying that perhaps bullets killed better at somewhat moderate velocities, and that surely correlated with my experience.

OP,

I searched long and hard for a load for my new-to-me 270. I went through a range of loads for the powder and bullets I had on hand. The tightest group I could obtain was just over an inch on a good day. I had a smith look at the barrel and stock. He said the barrel was in good shape but the stock was really flimsy.

I took the load with the tightest group and adjust the OCL. I used Hornady's load data along with an OCL used in the Nosler book. Mindful of the stock, I made sure the pressure point on the rifle was a little farther back (closer to the trigger guard) and found my sub MOA!!!!

Bullet: Hrnady SST 130 .277
Powder: H414
Load: 50grs
COAL: 3.320
Primer: CCI BR LR

I have been using the 270 Win since 1973 and nothing beats IMR 4350 in the 270

Slip some blue box federals into a cartridge holder and don't let on..

Spend your extra time on some other cartridge, or just being lazy.

Bea, this one is for you. I like to use IMR 4350 too because it's the only powder I could find for a long time around here and It's been my "go to" powder in my 30-06 and 338 win mag anyway. Here are the results with a 150gr. Nosler partition (seconds):

First 3 shots go sub moa, 5 shots into moa and 10 shots opening up to around 1.5 moa respectively. This is with a fwt model 70. Good enough for "hunting rifle accuracy":

Looking back at my pictures, this one was shot with a rifle I sold to 79s here on the fire. His daughter is going to be using it on a moose hunt this year.

My pre 64 model 70 fwt also like IMR 4350, but I had to drop the powder charge 1/2 grain to make it happy. OAL was still pretty close to the XTR FWT's (in above pic):

I've ran H4831 with 130gr. nosler partitions as well. My rifle doesn't seem to be too picky for a pre 64 fwt:

Nothing ? Maybe in your rifle. Surplus 4831 Did/Does, yes I have a few #s.

Also IMR 7828 does

in several 270s I have and have had.

Now, I'm not saying that 4350 doesn't work NOR that it's not accurate.
I'm saying in my rifles S 4831 & 7828 beat 4350 in VELOCITY & accuracy combined.

YMMV

Jerry

I have owned a 270 that wasn't more accurate with 4350 than 4831

Callin em out of the closet w/ this one John; I love it.

It really is ok tho; you don't have to play the "it's my friend's". If I can drive a Prius you can shoot a 270!

I used H4831 with 58 to 59 grains of powder with pretty good accuracy in my Ruger 77 and a Savage 116 Weather Warrior. The Savage liked Hornady 130 sst best but would shoot most good 130s and 140s accurately. The Ruger seems to be stuck on Speer Hot-Cor 130 as its favorite. I changed to IMR 7828 and both rifles became tack drivers, although in all fairness to H4831 I have to say the Savage is very accurate with both powders but IMR 7828 gets the best. The best 7828 load for the Savage is 58.8 grains with the bullet loaded within .010 of the rifling. I've begun using the Ruger as a night time hog rifle because it has a lighted reticle, and have been shooting 150 Winchester power points out of it. I inherited 1500 of these bullets and they work fine on big tough hogs. These are loaded with 57 grains of IMR 7828 which I think is over book max. For some reason the Ruger shoots fairly low velocity. With this over max load I get only 2750 fps but it kills hogs and deer very dead. Speed is not everything I suppose.

Yep, what Royce said. 56-58gr H4831 and any 13-140gr bullet. Just plain works.

55.5 grain H4831sc with 150 grain Hornady.

I believe my latest load is 52 grain IMR 4350 with 140 Sierra. Will double check.

I am trying to consolidate my rifles into a single powder -IMR 4350.

My CZ 550 shoots most things pretty well - but I have it on good authority EFW's Prius is a real slayer!!!!

I wouldn't give this blasphemer of the .270 Win the time of day, let alone any pet loads. Wake up buddy!
