There used to be a formula to get a good estimate of a fish when you didn't have a scale. Anyone know it?

What the hell is that about? prolly the same thing that popped into my mind, anyone thats fished much at all would realize there is no such formula....it exists for some species but no universal formula....all one has to do is look at a northern and a bass side by side to realize that.....

First, eat it whole (uncooked and no fixin's), regardless of species or FDA handling guidlines. Weigh your next full bowel movement on a butcher-wrap laced postal scale. Then multiply by a factor of 2.3 Hope this helps...

A 20" smallmouth in good health and a full stomach weighs 4 plus pounds a skinny woman 5'4" tall with C cups weighs about 105 pounds. I weigh 200 even 199 after a good BM. I forgot what the morel of the story was.

I remember reading an old F&S article years back that said your were suppose to measure the circumference of the tail fin, and divide that number by the diameter x 3.14 of the largest portion of the belly. Once you have gotten that number measure the total length of the fish and multiply that by 9.256098" this will get you really close and is really easy and convenient when you don't own a scale .
Circumference of tail C=8.250
Dia.= 6x3.14=19.44
Length= 18
Weight = c/dx3.14+L*9.256098
Weight = 3.9281 lbs.

The formula I gave has been around since I can remember. I don't use it, since I'm pretty good at guessing weight based on experience catching species I've fished for. But, It should get you in the neighborhood.

just cause somethings been around forever doesnt mean its right....it happens to work for what you catch but as i showed doesnt work for all species as a 18 inch walleye is gonna be closer to 2 pounds based on a hell of alot of data for the species than 4 and thats a hell of a difference.....guessing your catching mostly bass and similar shaped fish.....the formula must work pretty well for bass then....

Local Dirt's formula is fairly accurate for salmonids.....I've checked it several times on lake trout and was usually within 5%
