A few years back, I started a thread, something along the lines of "Is the 30-06 too much gun for whitetails?"

The storm that followed was impressive. First thing is, I was in NO way trolling. I started that thread after shooting a couple deer with the '06. One with a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, the other with a 180 grain Sierra Pro Hunter.

It seemed to me, after a sample of two, that the 30-06 was a damned fine Elk rifle. A tad of over kill for whitetails though.

Lots of folks took offense, and reported that the cartridge was ideal for the mythical 300 pounders up North.

Truth is, I never said it wouldn't work, just that I thought it was far more than necessary for a Whitetail.

Still feel that way.

All that being said, more power to the folks who want to shoot deer with cartridges more in line with Elk, Moose, Brown Bear and Cape Buff.

It is a good thing we live in America.

But George....those are shotgun zones.....aren't they?

You can't expect me to hunt there!

That's what you get for tryin to 'think'!!

I suppose you can venture east.....but definitely not north of any Notch without something that begins with .3 somewhere in your vehicle!

Little did we know that 115 years ago engineers at the Springfield Armory would solve our problems with a war time and peace time cartridge.

The 30-06 is presently my #1 hunting cartridge. I got a fine custom a few years ago and I am hunting for deer and varmints with it.

I have other rifles but this 06 is a favorite. It's has a custom stock with an octagon barrel. The load is the 155 VLD.

Of course the 06 is a big powerful cartridge but it can be shot well.

North of the Notch I bring a thutty-ought-six! Equally ubiquitous and brainless.

I've got a Remington 760 .30-06 that's never been drilled and tapped. It puts a 220 grain Core-Lokt on the money at 50 yards. It will be going deer hunting this fall.

I like a scope on a deer rifle for the Northeast as most require the buck to have antlers.

The antler law was a 3" minimum back in the 50's and now it's a fork horn!

It's easier for me to confirm that with a rifle scope.

My rifle had a 6X on it in 1953 and now the variables are in.

Don't you own a number of binoculars?

Never noticed, your custom has 2 triggers. Better for shooting those 2 shot groups with I guess....

To me the OP question has two answers.

It is not too much gun for a rifle looney or anyone who just enjoys frequently shooting rifles.

It is obviously too much gun for people who do not really enjoy shooting. Or hunters who depend on a gun salesman for advice.

When I was a teen in the late 50's and early 60's the canned sales reply was something like this: You will need a .270 to hunt wide open country, or a 30-06 if you hunt in woods or brush, or if you ever intend to hunt elk. Or just buy a 30-06 and you will never "have to" buy anything else.

Ridiculous, but I think these are among the reasons we see a lot of '06 shooters crowding the ranges in the autumn that don't now what they are doing, shoot a basketball size 20 shot 100 yard group and leave rubbing their shoulder after one round eventually goes into the bulls eye.

30-06 is boring until you are bored with everything else.
