Thanks fellas! I know the 95 is sometimes maligned by folks but I love the things. Yes I will attempt to hunt with it. It has some wear and tear, but I bought it to use it. Actually I felt it was a pretty decent price considering what I've seen some 95's go for.

This winter I'll make my annual nilgai run to Kenedy county will tote this old beast and see what happens.

It's got plenty of scratchin' left in the bore and I've got some ammo ordered for it. Wanna see how she performs before making any big investments in reloading equipment. But I think she'll shoot.

If she proves not a shooter, I've contemplated a rebore to 405.

I think it looks pretty good compared to many I looked at. I contemplated getting a .35 when I was searching for a .405. Hope we get to see it propped up against a recently deceased nilgai, it should do a great job!

Yes WP that's a pecan tree that came up in a bucket about 25 years ago! Thanks squirrel! : D

The old gun is tight and sound. And amazingly still has some finish is several places. Wished it would have had a Lyman #21 on it, but that's ok. I can still see the sights pretty good on her. Ok. Sometime a long time ago someone stuck some sling swivels on it. I can live with that. Ought to be the cats meow on some big hogs I know about too! They resemble a VW beetle!!!

Most of the nilgai I see on the place are always in the oakmotts. Can get pretty thick in some of those spots. Very rarely do the come out into the open on this place. But if you secret yourself along a trail and be real still, it can prove successful!!! This old beast should prove good medicine for a blue bull as it is.

.35 WCF has always intrigued me. I've owned '95s in .30-40 and .405. The only .35 WCF I ever had was the bottom barrel on a drilling, 12 gauge on top. It was quite light. With a steel plate on back, it was a kicking SOB.

I still have one empty case.

If it was me, if it shot well enough, I'd leave it as-is.

There was one for sale locally at a relatively cheap price about a year ago, and I still kick myself for not jumping on it. It would have been an interesting cartridge to load.

What bore size are they, .358?

Well fellas I admit! The rifle is worthy of additional work! She will shoot lots better than I can. I put about 12 rounds thru her and I can hold her in a 4-5" circle at 50 yards. And mebbe 7-8" at 100! If we had better shooting facility's I could probably tighten em up a bit more.

Very pleasant to shoot!!! Two things I discovered.

My eyes suck really bad! Need better glasses. I already knew this.

Other thing is the old girl tends to shoot high. Even out to 100 yds. And I have the rear sight on the lowest elevator notch. I was shooting a 250 grain spire point Hornady bullet loaded by Buffalo Arms. I would hold at 6 o'clock and still hit high.

Feel next step is investing in some dies and start stuffing some cases. Think I'll try a 200 grain RN. See what happens. Open to suggestions.

Overall I was satisfied. And with further work I believe she will perform.

Maybe she needs a "climbing Lyman"? Would be a shame to put a hole in it though.

Yeah. I was thinking of one. Or a Providence tool copy. But you're right, I really don't want to drill a hole in the receiver. I think I can work this out with some loading.

Gonna shoot it again this week some.

50 yards. Top two holes I was holding as best I could center.

Those next four I was aiming 6:00. Bottom of circle. Oh I did a little sight drifting. Got the windage settled. But when I backed off another 50 yds aiming dead center put em at 12:00 top of the paper.

I think I'll get it figgered out ok.

Then again it could just be me and my blindness & excitement. Prolly should just be happy with a bit of Kentucky windage.

Well the 200's should shoot lower. That said, I think I'd want to run nothing but 225's to 250's in it. I bet some cast bullets would be great too.

Thanks Steely! Yeah old son and I have had a long going conversation. We're thinking that rifle was designed for 250's. So I bet if I can come up with some decent brass we can make it do what we want!

I'm thinking this spun and drawn 30/40 Krag brass that the loaded ammo came with is too thin. Looks like we'll try to reform some .405 brass. That might help! I mean I shouldnt be bitchin'. For a blind guy I hit the target every time! laugh

Oh and some eventual cast boolit loads ought to be fun as hell!

You probably already have it but if not I have Dave Scovill's Legacy of Lever Guns on hand and I can ferret out the .35 WCF data if you can use it.

The shooting high appears to be a common malady in all the original 95, at least in both of mine (303B). A lighter( faster) bullet will drop POI. Mine has a pinned copper front sight so I tapped it out, made a taller one out of stock and now it prints dead center using my favorite 215gr Woodleighs that incidentally punch through both shoulders of a 200 plus pound hog. Lovely rifle and good luck!

Thanks Jorge! Once I get some more ammo loaded up, I'm back to the range. Already removed the sling swivels. Thankfully the front swivel was simply screwed into the existing forearm screw hole and bushing. Already replaced the forearm screw. Will plug the hole in buttstock when I can get more glue.

Got some 405 brass coming in so case mfg will be in the future. So far a fun and not too costly (yet) project!

I took my old Browning 1895 (Miroku) out to the range yesterday. Set it on sandbag. 100yds, open sight. Factory remington 180 RN. 3 shots and I put it away!

Them other covered up spots were from my old 94, 30 wcf

Edit! Sorry the Browning is a 30/06

Ok! Think I found the load.

48 grains IMR 4320
250 grain Hornady round nose
100 yds bench
( over two red fillers were at 50 yds)

Shot some old loads too. But this seems to work!

Young son knows my addiction for 95's. Sent me this photo he found of a group of Rangers in south Texas in 1915. This would have been around the time of the "plan of San Diego" so it's a pretty good bet these fellas saw a bit of additional action along the border!

Look at all those 95's!

Thanks WCH! Ive mentioned it before here but my adopts grand dad and Hamer were good friends. If you can find a copy of his bio "I'm Frank Hamer" for less than $200 snag it! It's a good read!

When he and his family lived over on Riverside drive in Austin he had a pet Javalina That had run of the neighborhood! LOL!

I'm glad you found a copy WCH! It's a great read! I have an old hard back that was a gift! I've heard lots of stories from Grandpa Marvin!

OT - Kaywoodie, I love your signature line and I love the works of Service. I've got a couple old 33 RPM vinyl albums with the poems of Robert Service read by Stewart Hamblem including "The Cremation of Sam McGee". Wonderful stuff from the old days.

Yooper!

Have you ever seen that old John Wayne, Marlene Dietrich movie "The Spoilers"???? Service has a cameo appearance in it!!! In a saloon scene they have him composing "The Shooting of Dan MaGrew"!!!

He spent a few years in Hollywood as a writer.

I have owned a couple of M/95 .35 WCF's over the years, I got my loading data from old Lyman and Pacific handbooks. I found Ken Water's Pet Loads article and data to be most useful though, I even corresponded with Ken regarding loads for the .35 WCF back in the day when he was andwering reader questions with a hand signed letter. I still have several of those letters, one devoted exclusively to M/95 .35 WCF and Kens experiences and loads. I agree regarding the "climbin Lyman" being the sight that would improve the shooting ability with that rifle but like you would not even think of drilling a rifle as nice as yours. The repro sights while not as costly as an original look like a repro and I would not consider putting one on an original rifle, a Browning '95 would be another story.

I'm going to pack the 35 WCF on the trips to the south Texas place. Just in the event I have an opportunity at a blue bull. Doubt I'll do any deer hunting. And there is also the much appreciated pig cull that always goes on down there.
That IMR 4320 load seems to be the one to stick with! It shoots them 250 grain RN's real good!!

Anybody here ever stumble onto an 1895 in 6mm Navy? Did any at all make it into production beyond the few made for gov't trials? I know very little re: 1895's. My question is based on a blurb I read last night in Phil Sharpe's "The Rifle in America" description of the '95 Winchester.

Ive never seen one. But that ain't saying much. But I do not believe they made it into mainstream production.
The most bizarre 95 I'd ever seen was a takedown model that had been reworked in Germany to some small Vom Hofe cartridge. Like 6mm or something. Came in the shop in a leg of mutton case. Best I remember it was a flat side. And best I remember it was t factory takedown. Solid rib barrel and all. That was over 30 years ago.

And I had a gunsmith compadre and hunting buddy that made himself a 6.5 x 55, 95 rifle too! Just on a whim.

But I would like to see an example of the one you speak of!

That rifle conjures up visions of a hunter wearing jodhpurs tucked into lace-up high boots, wool shirt, fedora, and spare cartridges in a leather waist belt- staring wistfully out over a mountain panorama.

Extremely cool, nice looking little slice of history there.

Knowing next to nothing (other than pics of Teddy slinging one) i googled for a minute and saw that they REALLY arent just giving those things away anymore, huh?

Nice guns thanks for posting.

Yes, I got to take that gun out and shoot it hot until the oil was smoking on the forearm. I am surprised it survived the day of abuse I gave it...
