going to dip my toe into shotshell reloading. whistle
Going to buy a few hundred new hulls from ballistic products , also powder shot ,wads, and primers, get a "matched set" from them to eliminate some variables.
problem is,bought my son a semi auto Beretta a few months ago, don't really want to see my empties flying about, so I want to get him a shell catcher.( I have a pump, and an O/U)
So my question is, does anyone have a brand they can recommend?
something that works good, and doesn't mark up his gun?

Do you really need to buy hulls from Ballistic Products? The only hulls I ever bought in my life were Winchester 28 ga
hulls and I had 2 thousand Rem STS 28 ga under the bench. I eventually gave the REM STS 28 ga away.

I have more hulls than I will ever shoot, all of them range pick ups.

I could just get pick ups from the club, and probably will, can probably get 2500 a day,but I understand shot shells are very much component specific,so to make it easier to start,I was just going to start out with a package deal of matched components,to eliminate some variables.

you know, this hull, this primer, wad, shot, rather than learning the hard way.
once fired hulls can be had for $6.99 /hundred

rios hulls

these are the brand the club sells,I can probably get 500 a week of empties for free, once I get set up.

Fluffy,

The RIO hulls are a 6 point crimp and not the 8 point crimp
you will find on Remington STS, gun Clubs of Winchester AA-HS hulls. Be sure you have a 6 point crimp die in your reloader. I would not even lower my to look at a RIO hull on the ground much less pick one up.

Just sayin.

Hmmm.
I have read somewhere recently, the writer was saying the Rios hull were surprisingly good.
I am going to get some empties from the club, section all the different kinds and compare the basewads.

from left
federal- top gun- paper base wad
rios- target -2 piece
suprema -target- 2 piece
Remington -gun club- one piece
herters- target -2 piece
fiochhi- 2 piece
-------------------------------
and in the same order

I would bet the rios, suprema ,and herters are the same hull. casual observation shows no difference, except for the herters headstamped brass is a little shorter.
I picked up 500 mixed or so in a few minutes today.

Try a fat rubber band around the action opening.

However, any shotgun used more than a little is going to get marks. wink

Which eh?

Anyway, have seen some use a rubber band around the action to catch shells.

The other is self explanatory.

Doc

the lee loader has both the 6 and 8 point crimp starter on it. smile

looking around the net,it seems a lot of the lower quality hulls are all cheddite hulls, which have been deemed perfectly serviceable,at least for a few firings.
it would seem if somebody is willing to buy the right primers and wads, most of them can be reloaded.
