Rcvd two new #1A 7mm-08's this morning. It was my understanding that Ruger was going to stock them with better walnut than last and prior year's production. These two are a tad better than average, but nothing special. Not worth the trouble of posting pics.

It's always been a "wood lottery" IMO. Over the weekend I stopped at one LGS and spotted an early 6mm BB in the rack. I started to get excited, seeing s/n 2920, but the wood was quite plain, and the price at $1300 made me pass.

Their heyday for fine wood was in the 1970's, but as we all know they also had a salt wood problem, too. smile

I'm still anxious to see the fast twist .223 1V, and the .257 Roy 1B smile

Yes, I believe you're right. Was hoping for better, as that was to be a major selling point, since the #1's have gotten pricey in the past few years.

A few years ago I picked up a couple #1A's on closeout, a 7x57 and .30-06, Davidson's had them on sale for about $700 and they both had fabulous walnut. Just lucky, they sold rather quickly.

I do have one of the standard Luxus Model 11's left, it's a .270 and has very nice turkish walnut. Luxus discontinued this standard model, I'm told they were losing money on them for what they charged.

I have four black pad rifles - a .45-70, .30-40, .218 Bee, and a .475 Turnbull. The Turnbull has only decent wood, but it is the best .475 I have seen. The other three are really good.

I've wanted a .450 Nitro Boddington, but have only ever seen one that had good wood. Ditto the .30-30 1A, but even when they were out I've never seen one with good walnut. And now it's been many months since I have seen for sale.

But it is good to hear they have a production run starting...

There was a Ruger Number One in .30-30 for sale on the RugerForum.com that I saw about two weeks after it sold.

It looking at the photos, I would have really loved that rifle. Haven't found a decent .30-30 since then ... and I've been looking.

That one certainly is not bad. If it appeared in front of me at that price, I'd probably jump on it. Even though I think a Low Wall would be a slightly better choice for the .30-30 smile

You got me curious about when my black pads were made, so I looked up their s/n's:

A .218 Bee, circa 1994:

.475 Turnbull, 2011

Two of mine are here guarding an original Hepburn in the center. On the right, a .45-70 from 1994, and on the left a .30-40 Krag from 2010:

Is a number 1 in the 458 win mag with great wood worth a grand?

IMO yes, especially if the rifle overall is in excellent condition.

I've got a 300 H & H that I can't sell. It has pretty decent wood. Anyone interested?
