For hunting, I carry 1 to keep one hand free for glassing, shooting, etc. It's very easy to use is for an improvised shooting stick. 1 way, for example, is to hold the pole by the shaft and with the same hand, grab a branch from a small tree or some brush. Pull sideways on the branch. The pole makes elevation solid while the branch makes windage solid

My favorites are the BD contour flicklocks, but I can't find them anymore.
My buddy got a pair of super duper new Leki's last year and they lasted almost half way through the hunt before one snapped. After talking to a few other folks, it didn't sound like his were the only ones.

My first pair were twist locks (respected brand who's name escapes me right now), and they were only reliable for about a year before the twist locks started to become a huge PITA. I locked 'em open one last time then gave them to my dad who last time I checked isn't using them.
I replaced them with Leki Khumbu Speed Locks, which are a flip lock, are tough, relatively light weight, and a breeze to use. Unless they're stolen, I'll keep these things forever.

I had problems with my low priced Cabelas twist locks. If they got wet in cold weather, they'd freeze. You could only hope you would like the length they were set at when they froze because they were going to stay that way until they thawed out.

Black Diamond for sure. Gave a set of Easton Carbon flick lok poles a good test here recently. Twice I figured they'd blowup, they didn't and they get a thumbs up!

Sheep hunting taught me the value of poles. I use two for sheep to keep balance in the steeper terrain. One for all other mountain hunting is adequate. Don't ignore the value of a field-made version either. The price is right and you don't have to pack it when you are finished.

I have the round ones and the contours. I bent one of the round ones when trying to catch myself when slipping on a muddy trail, but was able to straighten it out so that it can be mostly collapsed. I prefer the stouter contoured pole as I don't see myself bending one. Not sure who has the ellipticals in stock, I got mine a few years back from REI. I'll take a bit more weight in a pole in order to have it survive more than one trip and given my BD's have been used for multiple hikes and skiing, I'd say they make a solid pole that will hold up (most of the time).

I got mine in 2013 at REI. They really changed the way I use poles, as I could actually rely on them (previously had twist locks that would collapse if I put much weight on them).
After this year's sheep hunt, both of the tips are toast, but the rest of the pole is still good. I guess 4 sheep trips is pretty good. I looked for a replacement pair, but can't find the "contour" anywhwere.

You'd think one of the online out door gear sights would have a pair? BD definately has the locking system down, I've never had them slip.
My first pair of trecking poles were a no name brand that after 1/2 hour snow shoeing during lunch they'd slipped multiple times and I'd bent both of them.

Guy that broke the leki I mentioned above (which was a $180 set of poles) brought some Yukon Charlie poles this year that he got at Costco with a set of snowshoes. They did just fine, and he had already used them all winter snowshoeing on the trapline. I was kind of impressed.

I have some Komperdells with their version of the flip lock (they call it PowerLock).
Been tough on them and no disappointments.
What's also nice is they sell both summer and winter baskets, as well as, rubber tips.
Think they have the life-time warranty to boot.

I used an adjustable ice ax on this years moose trip. It was really quite good and I had a mini-ax to clear out some offending brush and the cursed Devils Club.
