Seen one at the gun show this morning. Was obviously re-blued, refinished. Looked like new. The butt stock had what looked like 99 style checking on butt stock. Did the 29B ever come with a checked butt stock? If someone was in the market for a redone 29B, this en was done right. Too "new" lookin for my taste.

" Did the 29B ever come with a checked butt stock?"

The standard for the 29B was a non-checkered butt stock. I can only say that it is unlikely that it is factory checkering.

That would make an excellent Christmas gift for a grandkid. Or if you adopted someone from Oregon.

To add to that, Numrich offers replacement checkered stocks and forearms. 29-B's were not serial numbered but have some letter's and/or symbols where the serial numbers used to be, these are also stamped on the stocks under the butt plate - the ones with symbols would be hard to fake, with serial numbers all you need is a standard set of stamps. I would want to pull the butt plate.

gunpartscorp 117640A
gunpartscorp 589240A These are listed for octagon barrel but will work just fine with a round, Savage used octagon contoured forearms with round barrels on the 29-A's, they have less surface contact with the barrel & just leave thin wear marks in the bluing so that's probably better.

Thanks, GeneB. I definitely looks like the butt stock from Numrichs. The gun was tempting, but I would rather have a worn original than a new looking iron thats been restocked/finished. A model 1917 in 32 auto also turned my head, but walked out empty handed.

I wonder if those stocks are leftover Savage inventory? That is a pretty good deal for a checkered, finished stock set.
