I had a 7mm saum built on a kimber Montana and finally got a chance to shoot it. Wasn't the best conditions to shoot in ( off the hood of the pickup with the wife and kid jumping around inside the pickup) but the montana shows some serious promise. I did a quick 3 shot group with 160 grain accubond on top of IMR 7828 one shot right after another not waiting for any cool down because the flying piss ants where thick as fleas on a coon dog. Third shot is the one off to the right. I'm sure if I'd waited for barrel to cool they all three would have been together but I'll take it. Can't wait to get on an actual bench and see if it's repeatable and then start whacking some steel. The mashburn may be taking a backseat to the Montucky this fall.

A 7mm SAUM would be a great setup on a Montana.

There is no reason to let the barrel cool between shots, save throat erosion. What you are seeing is the deviation between shots, nothing else. A properly stress relieved barrel can be shot until it melts and it won't walk.

How many barrels are properly relieved then?

Very cool build. I've fired my 7 saum 5 times. 2 shots getting a rough zero and fired a 3 shot group. Start load was 58gr 4831sc under 162amax

Nice build! What brand and contour barrel did you spin on?

Just a factory rifle. Have been interested in the chambering and this factory 700 came up for sale here.

I remembered you buying that and saying you was rebarreling to 7saum. Been curious to see how it worked out.....seems to be working out very well for you. Was a good idea and I'm sure a great rifle you have.

Laker,

A 7SAUM in a Montana is pretty cool! And shows gobs of potential there.

My 7SAUM took a liking to R22.

I just got into my first 7 SAUM. Dies and brass are in route. I'm liking the idea of the 120 TTSX at 3400 fps and the Leup 6x42 long range duplex. Sighted in with a 340 MPBR, the first dot is 400 yards, second is 500, and thick portion of reticle is 600; all plus/minus 10 yards. In all reality, I'd probably never take it beyond 400. Should be a killing machine!

Laker, I have Kimber WSM sitting in the safe I've been contemplating a rebarrel for. I'm assuming that no modifications were needed, and it feeds well?

Very nice! I've pondered a 6.5/7 SAUM build on a Montanna for a couple of years now. Your rifle looks like a winner.

Lots. What people believe is "heating up" is simply the real group size. Fore one round at a time for 10 rounds letting the barrel cool completely between each shot, or fire 10 back to back. Do each enough times and compare targets and they'll look identical.

Would this also apply to a 270 WBY MAG 130 GR @ 3400+fps?

Nice. I have a 6.5mm Brux 2 contour that I might just save for a Montana rebarrel as well.

The SAUMtucky continues to impress. Threw a load together with 140 grain accubonds on top of 7828 and they did this off the hood of the pickup.

But now the wife has latched on to it so I guess it's me and the mashburn this fall
