My friend does no reload. He wants advice on the best factory ammo in 270 win. He has a pre 64 model 70 with a 2x7 vxr. (i think a featherweight) Thanks.

Federal premium stuff, Nosler, Barnes etc. I would go buy something loaded with a 150gr partition and call it a day.

I don't use factory ammo but if I did I'd be tempted to try that Federal Premium 140 gr Trophy Bonded Tip.

I also vote for federal premiums of some flavor. Someone mentioned Federal High energy. I thought they stopped making those a few years ago???? Good luck with your elk hunting!!!!

Tell us what he wants to hunt with it? If he just wants to hunt up to medium sized deer, it is hard to beat regular Remington core-lok. If bigger deer (northern whitetail or mule deer) or other bigger game is on the table, then federal premium with a premium bullet. I am also currently shooting Barnes Vor-tex with TSX bullets. Getting a 3/4" group at 100 yards. Taking them elk hunting this fall

I am planning to shoot my next 270 elk with a 130 grain Winchester/Olin Power Max Bonded. They shoot good groups in both my CLR and Remington 760.

Put a well constructed bullet (TSX/TTSX, Partition, Bonded) in the right place on targets from field positions and he'll be ready for elk.

I used a 270 for many years for elk. I much preferred 150 gr bullets. They fly almost to the same point of impact as 130's and hit harder when they get there.

my 270 shoots the 130 ttsx sub moa out to 400 (2.5" and is as far as I have gone)
only taken a deer with it but would not hesitate for elk or bear or moose

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Good point!

For elk, I would prefer 140-150 grain.

Federal premium 140 trophy bonded tip or 150 gr nosler partition. Both will be great elk medicine out to around 250 yards.

Just took a look at the at Winchester 150 gr XP3. Retains almost 2000 ft lbs at 300 yards with a controlled expansion bullet and flies pretty flat. Pretty impressive if it is accurate.

130 gr 270 bullets kill elk fine. I'd choose one of tough construction.

Never seen an elk walk away from a 150gr Cor-lokt, and I have seen a few fall.

I would buy a couple different 150gr loads and see what the rifle likes best.

Just a quick look at Midway shows more ammo that I would be fine with using on elk than not.. So many great factory offerings for the 270 Winchester it's hard for us handloaders to beat them by much.

I'd probably go with the tried and true Federal or Doubletap loaded with the 150 PT's.

I had to run factory loads when I was stationed in California since I lived in the barracks/base housing and used the Winchester Supreme 140 AB's in my 270 WSM.. Those handled Muley's and elk okay as well.

I would try 150's and 130's in a good bullet/tough. Whichever shot better within reason. Go kill elk.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H
