I know, I know, leave well enough alone!  If we were practical, we'd all be shooting a .308! That said, I have a M-700 with a .338-06 barrel. Can it be cut back & rechambered to .338 Fed and installed on a M-7 action, or wouldn't there be enough left? Thanks! That depends on how much thickness is left in the barrel, especially the shoulder area.

Teeder, I would look for a good gunsmith and ask him. I too have sold my 338-06 and took up w/the 338F. I like it a lot. powdr

Just thinking out-loud. I rarely need this much power for most of the hunting I do, but still like the bullet diameter. A short/handy thumper would suit my needs better for the thick stuff I normally hunt. (thinking SS M-7 with a 20-21 inch barrel)

I see. From reading these forums anyone who has the 338Fed are very happy with it. Could you make the 338RCM work? But maybe just more of the same as the 338-06. I have a 338-06AI and am very happy with it.

'Twould be easier to just load it down. A reduced or starting load with 180gr ABs would still notch a lot of tags... To the OP, if you handload, H4895 should be able to safely give you the reduced recoil/velocity that you're looking for without anything other than changing out the powder. At a minimum, worth trying a $25 pound of powder to potentially avoid the need for machine work... Unless you really just WANT to try a .338Fed ...  in which case, go for it...

Love my 'little' 358 Win. 200 grainers at a 'whoppin' 2500 puts the end to the discussion with the pigs and axis around here.

Update - I've come to my senses and am going to leave this rifle alone. I've been doing some playing with it this week and really fell back in love. I plead temporary insanity.  (I will make a .358 Win on a little M-7 action one of these days though )
