Found this in an April 26, 1906 American Rifleman:

The SAVAGE TAKE-DOWN RIFLE

The Savage Arms Co, of Utica, N.Y., in response to the demand for a take-down rifle, has applied this principle to the Savage 1899 model.

From a circular recently issued we quote as follows:
"With very slight alterations we have been able to convert our regular 1899 model rifle into a take-down, without in any way sacrificing strength or durability. The takedown feature is the simplest that has ever been devised for a high power rifle; in fact, it is no more trouble to take this rifle down than it is the ordinary double barrel shotgun. When the rifle is assembled and the fore-end in proper place, the barrel and receiver are locked securely together. This is a distinctive feature of the Savage take-down."

This rifle will be ready for delivery July 1.

Also found it with minor alteration in a May 10, 1906 edition of "Hardware" as well as a July, 1906 edition of "Recreation".

Hardware added in that:

The Savage Arms Co. can furnish any of the round barrel "Model 1899" rifles illustrated in their catalogue, with Take Down feature, at an additional charge of $5, excepting the featherweight.

Recreation was a shorter ad consisting of
Quote
With very slight alterations, The Savage Arms Company, Utica, N. Y., has converted the regular 1899 model rifle into a takedown, without in any way sacrificing strength or durability. It can be furnished in .25-35, .30-30, .32-40 or .38-55 calibres - 22 or 26-inch barrels only. The advantage for cleaning and for transportation make it worth while to have a take-down".

So.. this seems to pinpoint availability of takedowns to July 1, 1906. Obviously there will be a few produced earlier both as trial firearms and probably a couple of months worth of production to ramp up for July 1 availability. Looks like 1906 serial numbers run from 68,000'ish to 74,000'ish - so 71,000 would be mid-summer.

Which matches up with what we've seen, I think. Makes those pre-70.000 rifles likely to be special order rifles that were finished late or early test rifles.

For later discussion will be why the featherweights were excluded, and when they began to be available as takedowns. grin

I took a quick look through some catalogs to see if there were any definite dates listed, but there weren't, but here scans of some of the pages anyway.

Dealers page sent out to be added to catalog No 15, this page is included in No 16 -

Single page loose insert from catalog No 24 - the other side of this page, 16b, has the "NEW MODEL 1909". In No 24 second edition this is bound in as page 16b and 16a has a large picture of hunting trophy's.
