I picked up a couple old KA-BAR and CASE knives recently that need refinishing. One thing I'd like to do is bring the natural leather color back to the handles if possible but on the old case the leather looks dark chocolate. I'm sure it's from oil in the hands and God knows what else. Any suggestions on what would draw that oil out? I was thinking Dawn, but any tried and true suggestion would be welcome.

They say everything happens for a reason.
For me that reason is usually because I've made some bad decisions that I need to pay for.

Were I inclined to remove oil from a rifle stock or leather handle I would drop the item into a container of the thinners used by car spray painters.

These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

I'm thinking cleaning the leather washers is not going to happen. If you want it restored, you will have to have the handle material replaced.

Why bother? The patina was earned and the knife was used. Continue to use it, display it as it is and as it deserves to be, or sell it to someone else who appreciates it as it is.

Whiting, it is used to take oil stains out of gunstocks. I believe that Brownell's has it.
