Here is last seasons cow and the old .375 H & H.. Since our local seasons are for any elk, I usually take the first fat cow elk I see.. This was a pretty long shot for the .375..
But it worked this time..

From (all but one) past elk hunts:

My longest shot ever, 487 yards, was from here, shortly after this photo was taken. Cow elk in the freezer.

Hunting buddy of nearly 20 years. No elk but some awesome scenery:

The day before we were literally surrounded by elk here and I took one. Then came the snow. This day, no elk, but I got my second before the trip was over.

We've taken quite a few elk out of this area over the years. I sure miss Big Red and the power of the diesel engine.

Son-in-law (right) and I skinning an antelope. The skinning rack takes only a few seconds to set up.

Son-in-law and daughter #2. A herd of elk showed up a few minutes later at the bottom of the hill.

No elk here this trip, but what a view. Bakers Peak is in the background. Another year we took three out of this general area.

Home sweet home for many a hunt.

Overwatch. Nothing like a good book to help pass the time. That and laying back in the warm sun listening to the occasional elk bugle. Got my cow at dusk the second day.

My blue heeler Heidi. Worked her way onto 6 elk hunts. RIP.

Which one is the animal?

I came back the next morning for the antlers and remaining meat to find a bear had claimed the gut pile. The blue heelers haired-up and were going crazy.

Sangre De Cristo's

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Last years Backpack trip a few miles deep in the Sangre De Cristos. Absolute brutal hunt. Called in this bull from above timberline and the brother in law mad a ten yard poke.
