I am shooting varget in my 30 06 with 180 grain core locts. I am shooting 48grains. Chronos at 2640 out of a 22" barrel. This load is very accurate and there is room for an increased powder charge if you want to increase velocity. This powder also works really good in 243s up to about 90 grain bullets,as well as 308s. Shooting it with 155 scenars in the 308 and it is lights out. An excellent all around powder.

If it is all you have I'm sure you can get a load that'll work. I like it in a 308, but there are several better options in 30-06. Especially with heavier bullets.

48 gr with 180's is over max according to my sources. There are several options that will give you 2800fps with 180's and still be under max.

58gn with 130gn Barnes TTSX = 3100fps
55.5gn with 150gn Partition = 3036fps
53gn with 165gn Failsafe = 2861fps
52gn with 180gn Sierra SP = 2752fps
I haven't tried it with anything heavier but roughly speaking, you can drop another 2 grains per bullet weight increase.

thank you very much all.

i ended with 47.1 gn for 200 grains nosler partition, hodgon was giving 47 gn for 200 accubond.

John i may have been able to drop two or more gn going to 49 or 50 as there were enough room and will try it next time if this load is not working.

all the best.

Phil,
My loads were generated before any loading data was ever published and verified in several rifles so tweaking is always likely with chamber and barrel variables plus the powder lot to lot variation.

Good luck with it.

I get that YMMV, but your charge is about 10% over Hodgdon's max.

I use 49 grains under a 150 NAB for 2870 fps.

Which is why I wrote my last entry to say I predate everything published for this powder.

I used traditional methods the same as eveyone else and tried these loads in several rifles and like everyone else, my loads are my loads and only give you a snapshot of "my" experience.

We all have to work up our own loads and in another rifle, I would have to do the same.

True, but he also didn't list the cases involved. Hodgdon, IIRC, uses Federal which will run up to 7.5% less in volume than Remington or Winchester. He also didn't state the COAL, and the longer the COAL, the lower the pressure because of the increased capacity in the powder chamber.

If everyone continues to do what they already do in developing handloads, history tells us we are a pretty safe bunch.

PS: I pretty much standardized on Winchester cases and Federal primers for everything standard and naturally Weatherby/Norma (same thing) for Weatherby cartridges. COL is only relevent to the rifles I used, but yes, I do measure it.

'4350, RL-15, RL-17, RL-19, '4064, '4895, Varget, and a bunch of others work just fine.

The .30/06 is an incinerator, which just ads to its versatility.

Evidently this thread has been around just long enough now that people are responding without reading it, per usual for the Campfire.

Laughing. True.

I think the OP got his question answered, though.

In my younger years used RL 15 with 165 gr bullets in 06 similar burn rate to Varget.

Had pressure issues so went back to slower burn rate powders for anything heavier than 150 gr bullets.

No pressure issues and faster speeds.

Don't know what the velocity is as I don't have a chronograph, but I use R15 with 165gr bullets in the 30-06. I did some extrapolating of Nosler's data and looked up the results that AussieGW posted and came up with 52gr as max with the 165gr Partition. It seems to work. It pushed 1 bullet through 3 pigs... wink
