I'm 78 and a retired Gunsmith and love this site. What I don't understand is if somebody asks a question or seeks some imput they are bashed for it. If you have to belittle someone for asking something weather to gain knowledge or get the answer to a question why not let nature take its course in a civil manner. Just my .02. Now if we were talking about Hillary let the bashing begin.

It's been that way for some time. It's been standard forum fare to turn on the person who starts the topic.

I have seen things go full circle. Used to be that standard calibers were, well, the standard. Then magnumitis set in and everyone needed a magnum. And now folks have gotten their senses about them again.

Bullets have gotten better, laser rangefinders cheap etc.

Sir, thank you for that. I read that bashing and thought "such big type, such a little mind."

As I stated, deer here are in the 165-180 pound class, but really 180 is a whopper unless it is on a big patch of private land and feeder fed, which is not how I get the pleasure of hunting, so again, 30-06 is almost more than needed. Of course, those that post things such as you allude don't read it, there are just there to bash.

7mm RM is my very favorite deer caliber it gets the job done without much thinking out to 350 yards and in the hands of an experienced shooter much farther is possible. I'm biased hunting pretty much all in the West (I can see the Pacific ocean from 2 of my hunting spots on a clear day) so long shots are certainly possible but our deer aren't very large either so a 6.5 or 270 would work about as well. On the other hand if you shoot the rifle ?well who cares if you shoot your deer with a 375H&H.

The RAR seems to handle full boat 180 grain 30-06 loads without too much recoil so the 7 mag shouldn't be too bad to shoot and since I already have the brass & dies that saves time and money. But it wouldn't really be that tempting to replace my old model 77 Ruger, might be nice for a grandson or nephew though.
