Hi-

I would like to take my husband and my dog grouse hunting in Wyoming or Montana, preferably central to eastern; Can anyone suggest the best areas to get into multiple grouse species in October? Can include chukar and partridge as well.

I hunted the area around Winnette, Mt. several years ago and did well on several species.. Ringnecks do not open until mid Oct. I think.. The first weekend is pretty busy..

But there were lots of birds that year..

Wy. Bighorn Basin can have some chukar and huns, but the numbers were really low last year..

A place I always wanted to try is Plentywood, Mt. seems like lots of birds and NO rattlesnakes..

Do you see a lot of rattlesnake this late in the year? I was thinking of going to paradise valley near Livingston, not sure how the bird population is there but I know the area and really like it.

I am not sure about the snakes.. Maybe some of the Mt. guys can help you with that..

When I hunted there, the game warden told me east of Lewistown access was easier to get for bird hunting.. It was more old Montana.. The farther west one went the more influence the California yuppies had on everything..

I also hunted north of Roundup quite a bit.. Had some good shooting there.. For forest grouse western Mt would be the spot.. They would have blues, ruffs, and sprue grouse..
I mostly when for the prairie grouse because I enjoy the open country..

rattlesnakes can be very area dependent.....one spot they can be thick but a similar looking piece of ground a short ways away can have nearly none.....so unless someone knows the specific chunk of ground your looking to hunt its hard to say.....for instance around where i am at they are fairly common on the southside of the Missouri but extremely rare to the point of nearly nonexistent on the northside.....30 miles down the road they are common on both sides....

Western Wyoming, Star valley area in the National Forest, Salt Creek pass, always had fair to good luck on blue grouse, ruff grouse. Enjoyed hunting that area for several years. Like all bird hunting, it can be feast or famine, don't know till ya hunt it.
