That almost looks like a barrel nut with a hole for a spanner wrench. I could be wrong.

That occurred to me, but looks kinda sloppy for something done on purpose. Might go into the barrel.

I sent a picture to the manufacturer asking them what it is. A place for a spanner to bite makes sense. It is sloppy though.

Looks like a Remington 700 to me... Did the bolt handle fall off and trigger snap too. The extractor hanging on by a fingernail?. Wait, it is a fingernail.. Carry on..

An index mark to shorten the the process of setting the head-space when swapping barrels? I would agree that whatever it is, it does look sloppy.

A hole to install a pressure sensor? Or maybe a hole for the barrel nut wrench?

that's what I'm thinking - looks to be a barrel nut on that barrel, or some odd profile I've never seen...

It looks like the barrel nut has a small hole that aligns with a detent drilled in the barrel.
Tighten the nut and lock it in place by stamping the smaller outer hole into the larger detent?
I'd assume corporate doesn't want the consumer to re-barrel the rifle.

Looks like the barrel nut was staked to the barrel once headspace was established.

Mossbergs are known for their accuracy, they rival Tikkas.
