At 78 my feet are getting a little tender when hiking. I have mostly Danner boots but was wondering what padded type socks do you all use? Thinking about getting some more Thorlos as they seem pretty good but any others you might recommend?

I've had Thorlos but prefer wool socks because they feel less clammy. Darn Tough socks are good. I've gone to a thin synthetic liner sock with a heavier wool sock on top. Injinji makes good liner socks if you go that route.

My current Danners are a little tight at the ankle. Thick socks cut off my circulation even without lacing the boots even slightly tight. Bigger boots have my feet sliding around getting blisters. (That's not a Danner bash, other boots fit ME even less well.)

Cotton tube socks fit best early in the day but they get damp and ball up. Wool socks of a similar thickness work best for me.

Generally when it is truly cold I switch over to heavy wool socks inside low tops with gaiters to keep the snow out.

I use a smart wool liner sock and then a light weight smartwool hiker sock over that. I recently got some new in soles that have arch support but also have some cushion in them.

Fits is a brand not a condition and they are fantastic. They aren't too thick, give you comfort, wicking and long lasting durability. They aren't cheap but well worth the price, as you won't be wearing them out anytime soon...

That reminds me of a brand of work socks Sears used to sell. They also had a lifetime guarantee. The socks would last about a year but the guarantee was good. They came in 3-packs. When I bought a pack, I'd stick the receipt to the label and toss it in a box. When I had 3 worn out pairs, I'd get out the oldest receipt and send them in. They'd replace them without question. I went for many years without buying socks. The problem was that the replacements never came with receipts and you HAD to send in the receipt, lifetime or not, so you couldn't get the warranty on them.
