RTSJ, the SWFA's are a helluva scope for sure. I've got one and have shot with a couple of them and I really like them.

I hope that you get some good roasts off him. I was impressed with a bear roast that I was given.

We have found that there are a couple of good roasts on the hindquarters. Strange as it sounds, the reason I love bear hunting here in CO so much is because the fat makes just awesome lard. We rendered some again this year.

So you get a great hide, a cool looking skull, as much lard as you want to render, and a roast or two along with some great German smoked sausage. Plus they are smaller than elk so old guys like me can get them off the hill easier:)

Slow heat the fat and while doing that heat up your canning lids and rims. Then layer your funnel with 4 layers of cheesecloth. Ladle out the oil which looks like a good amber ale into the quart or pint jars. Put the lid and rim on and seal it up tight by hand. When it cools, it naturally seals it up and lasts for us up to 2 years. Turns white as snow and use it for all manner of things.

Hair grease???

Mix bear lard to beeswax at a 4 to 1 ratio and use it on my boots. Works great. And we use it in all recipes that call for lard, plus we use it in biscuit recipes a lot.

Going to try it on patches for the Hawken too. If you do some research on it, bear lard is actually pretty healthy compared to other lard types.

Actually I usually pick choke cherries and make choke cherry jam to go with my bear biscuits. Didn't have time and the berries weren't that great this year. Going to be stuck with biscuits and gravy I guess.

Once had a neighbor insist his bear grease mix was the absolute best thing in the world for my Whites boots. I allowed its application, and within a week one could hardly stand to be in the same room with them. Never again. Nothing like rancid boots.

Can't speak to that, but the bear lard I render is odorless and whiter than crisco. If a bear is eating fish or dead cows, I am guessing it may have smelly lard. Also if you get your fire too hot you can and will make a smelly mess. Go slow with berry and acorn fed bears and it is an amazing substance.

My boots do very very well with the bear lard I am using.

Yeah, but.... Your nose is a long way from your boots.
