My bow has been sitting in its case in the garage for at least 3 years without being shot. How do I know if the string is still sound? It gets really hot in there in the summer (120+) but I don't know if the temp alone will deter the string life or not. What is a good rule of thumb for knowing if your string is OK or not?

when it starts breaking the strands than make up the string.
A Doe walks out of the woods today and says, that is the last time I'm going to do that for Two Bucks.

Heat is harder on the laminated limbs if you have those, than the string/cables.
Sitting for three years will probably show you a bit of stretch and a need for a tune. If the strings and cables were in decent shape going into the case, they are probably still OK.
Every time I've went in "needing" new strings and cables, I've been told they'd last the season. Look at your string for frays, big ones - not a little fuzz, and check the servings for separation. While it may be some wear, you'll know separation when you see it.
