There's been a few posts on Remington pumps lately, so I thought I'd add this one to the mix. I've had it in the safe for awhile...a minty Rem 760 in 6mm Rem. While there's lots of .243 760s out there, a nice 760 from the '70's in 6mm is a rare bird. Since I'm a lefty and always liked Remington pumps, buying this was a no-brainer.

Now that I'm off active duty (retired finally), I have the time to shoot as well as run errands for the ball-and-chain. I was looking for a factory load that would be a good TX deer-slayer. After lots of testing, I found that the regular, blue-box Federal 100 grain soft-points shot superbly. What's also nice is that this load is AVAILABLE. Most everything else is hard to find or discontinued in 6mm. I used my Cabela's points and stocked up on 200 rounds of this load; along with the rebate from Federal, I'm actually ahead. 200 rounds should last me the rest of my shooting days. It'll make a nice pig and deer rifle from a stand.
Bob

I had a mint, unused 25 year-old Leupold 3-9x Vari-X II that I mounted, with Leupold rings and base. It's low over the bore and looks pretty good. Notice the lack of wear on the action bars. That'll change. [Linked Image]

Close up of the Leupold mount. A great all-steel mount for the 6mm. Looks good and mounts low.
[Linked Image]

5 shots, Fed blue box 100 grainers. I bought a bunch, but it's still available in most large shops. The trigger on this Remington is pretty good for a pump, too...4 lbs, no creep, with a nice roll-off. Not a 1 lb Jewel trigger, but OK for a hunting rifle.
[Linked Image]

Total retro...shiny finish, white spacers, skip-line impressed checkering. I like it, though. A lefty's dream.

Back in the 90's I worked for a large gun shop that carried a good inventory of used firearms. Once a week I'd make a trip to the range to function check any guns that had come in during the week to make sure there was no problems with them before we put them out for sale. I checked a quite a few 760's during that time and never found one that didn't shoot well. Some extremely well.

That is one nice 760 and in the best of the 24 calibers. Best of luck with it.

Chronographs, bore scopes and pattern boards have broke a lot of hearts.

I had a 243 version and I believe brownells sells a replacement spring for the trigger assembly that does good things. Super easy swap out and very inexpensive upgrade. Just a thought.

Also nice rifle dude. We do large scale deer drives as a club and a pump is a nice driving gun. Running shots are fun with em too.

RGK, many years ago I vaguely remember reading a story about a USA rifle team being invited to compete with a rifle team (or teams) over in Europe. One of the events was running boar shooting. Remington supposedly supplied the team with 760s in 6mm Rem to use in that event. Supposedly, the USA team won the event even though it was something new to them.

Now, my memory could be totally failing me here. Heck, I might have even dreamed it up, but the story dang shore sounds good, don't it! If anyone else remembers anything like this, please speak up and tell me I don't have early onset Sometimers Disease.

By the way, dang nice rifle, Sir! Never had a 760 that wasn't a shooter.

I wouldn't be without a pump rifle, even it were just for tradition reasons here in Pa

You are totally correct. The US Team won the World Cup in Oslo, Norway in running deer (1960 or '61) using Remington 760 rifles. I remember seeing them in storage in the AMU arms room at FT Benning, GA. Don't remember the caliber, though.

Every Remington I've owned in 6mm has been a very accurate shooter. Never owned a Remington pump rifle, but I'd sure as hell buy that one in a heartbeat. Sweet looking rig!

Beautiful rifle. Me ex BIL used to hunt with a 760 6mm Rem. He even killed a PA Bear with it and he would insist on using 85 grainers. One day he blew a nice hole through his hand by pulling it into his treestand loaded. He never stopped pulling that gun into his stand loaded though. Stupid is as stupid does.

Here's my other pump; a Remington 7600 in .30-06. Scope is a Weaver commemorative steel-tube 4X. It's also mounted in Leupold steel rings and a Leupold one-piece base. Great combo; love the scope.

That sure is a lefty's dream. I was packing mine around the woods for the last 2 days. Your 6mm rem is very nice. Thanks for sharing...

Shot my first two bucks as a little tyke with an ancient 760 stamped .244. It was my Great Grandad's gun he loaned me every fall. I used the same blue box 6mm load on both of those deer.

I have been tossing around a 760/7600 to match my 750, but have been wondering, where are the sling studs on these rifles?

They are wherever you put them.

Uncle Mikes sells a package of them for the 760/7600 you install your self. If you know how to use a drill and a screwdriver, it takes about 10 minutes.

I always check the used rack for nice pumps. Unfortunately, almost all I see have been rode hard and put away wet.

Very nice rifle. I'm jealous.

Brace yourself, though. It won't be long before some azz comes on here and tells you that windage adjustable mount won't work!

They are an under appreciated rifle. The iron sighted '06' I had would put three into 2 inches at 200 yds.
I'm currently playing with an older model in .257 Bob. Again, iron sights. After trying several loads, none went over three inches for four rounds at 100, and some were in the 1.5 MOA range.
One of the reasons why the Benoits have used them for many years is because they work under tough conditions, unlike the Remington 740/742's. E

i've owned multiple calibers of every rem pump over the years. all have been shooters even with their typical stiff triggers. i found a factory 7600 carbine in 35 whelen a few years ago and splurged on a match trigger for it. it is literally a one-holer.

Nice rifle! The 760 are greatly under appreciated and are accurate. Had an old 760 marked 244. With 80 gr bullets it would make nickel and dime size groups. Killed several deer, hogs and coyotes with it. Made several good memories with the old rifle. Thanks for the post and pictures.

Not so. There are lots of .30-06 and .270, a nice .243 will bring over $1K at PA auctions. A 6mm a few hundred more than that.

Thanks Tom. And also, thanks for the knowledge on these rifles. I've since been doing some research and I think I've scored somewhat of a gem, thanks to you.

My uncle has been shooting a 760/6mm since at least the late 70's. ~4-5yrs ago the scope crapped out on him. I usually have a spare 3-9x40 Vari-X II Leupold so mounted it for him. Same blue box 100's that the OP mentioned worked for him, work exceptionally well in my uncle's rifle too. Right at 2" 200yd 3-shot groups. I was very surprised at the accuracy. I sold an awful lot of 7600's, 6's, and 760's during my college gun-shop employment but I'd never really spent any time shooting one. I was sort of expecting the rifle to be one of those that you sort of have to guess about POI because the groups are horrible and it's difficult to know what adjustments to make. I couldn't have been more wrong. From initial bore-sight it took 3 shots to get POA/POI lined up where I thought I wanted it. Moved to the 200yds target and had a dead-on POA/POI. Confirmed w/2 more 3-shot groups over the course of the afternoon between shooting other things and called it good.

One reason is because they have free floating barrels. They are known for accuracy among the folks that use them. That's why in .308 they were the very first sniper rifles chosen by the FBI.
