Quite a few people have e-mailed or called Eileen asking about the progress of THE BIG BOOK OF GUN GACK: A Hunter's Guide to Handloading Smokeless Rifle Cartridges. The printer notified us that we will have copies later this month.
A place for pre-orders will be up on riflesandrecipes.com as soon as we know the printing/shipping costs to us, but we do know it will be around $30 shipped. It's a big book, about the size of a GUN DIGEST.

elkhunter,
There's a section in the front with chapters on various aspects of handloading, such as sizing cases straight, plus chapters on the details of components.
Then there are chapters on loading different rounds, most on just one cartridge but some including several, such as the one on the three factory .17-caliber centerfires. There's some history on each cartridge, often involving how it's handloaded. The data often contains results from several rifles, not just a pressure barrel. All together right around 60 cartridges are included from the .17 Hornady Hornet to the .416 Rigby.
In the rear there's a list of manufacturers of various products, a couple of appendices including fairly easy formulas for figuring potential velocity and recoil, and an index.

Can I get just the section on the 270 Win? the rumor I heard around here is that Ingwe put the kybosh on that chapter so John would have more room for the 7x57 chapter. Geno

I'm interested in the chapter on the 35 Whelen Ackley.
Seriously, I'm interested in this book. I don't have any magazine subscriptions anymore, and I enjoy reading John's writing.

John,
I'll be ordering one anyway as there is sure to be chapters on 9.3's, 6.5x55, and .303 (I hope).
Do I hold out hope for a chapter on the ".25 super hornet" (AKA .256 Win Mag)?

In another conversation you mentioned "high math" and I asked how high. You said as high as I wanted to go. In response I asked a question which, in the context of that conversation, a person possessed of moderately advanced mathematical knowledge/training could easily answer immediately and in a casual fashion.
Your answer was not quickly forthcoming, was not correct, and in fact another poster noted your answer was pretty much what the first Google search result would reveal.
Instead of saying "I don't know" you took the bait and scrambled to Google. That put a ding on your credibility rating.
To bloviate is your modus operandi and you've been called on it numerous times. Your personal level of butthurt is running high. Yet you can't tear yourself away from all the mean old rubes around here.

No, we're not accepting pre-orders quite yet, but will be soon. Will post it here then, but in the meantime will keep a list from this thread of those who said they wanted to order one.

Valsdad: Hi Amigo: As usual your posts are down to earth common sense. Also as usual my comments perceived EXLUDE the vast majority of participants and apply ONLY to a tiny handful. Sorry but you and most others didn't make the grade on the squirrel list. I actually agree with you summation of John's attributes. I'll be buying my 5th fifth book from them. But not for me, for my Grandson. Incidentally it looks like I will have to have a little talk with John about "largess" since I single handedly increased his book sales 400% in less than 24 hours !!! Haven't youse Guys "figgered" out that I am just "messin" around most of the time ?

Mulie, I want one! However, I need the addendum on the .250 Savage. I might be the only one that shoots it, but you covered my other favorites - 6.5 x 55, 9.3 x 62, and .450/.400. That list makes me conclude you have exquisite taste in cartridges.

ringworm,
Unfortunately it's not going to be available as an e-book. We actually don't get many requests for any of our publications as e-books, probably because hunters and shooters tend to be a little older than average Americans, and also more traditional.
But the big reason is data is a major leaguge PITA to convert to e-book format. Simple text works fine, but when lots of numbers are involved, especially in a particular layout, they tends to get severely scrambled. Since most of our books contain some data (including Eileen's cookbooks) we're bypassing the entire headache!

hatari,
Oh, the .250 Savage gets plenty of attention, in a long chapter called "The Accurate .25's" that includes the .250 and the two .257's, Roberts and Weatherby. The .25-20 and .25-06 got their own chapters because the .25-20's so different from the "modern" .25's, and the .25-06 because it's by far the most popular .25.

It is no surprise, perhaps, that WET shares his name with a recent president of some disdain, while our respected gunwriter-friend has a lot in common in stalwart repute with Jack O'C. And, of course, "Jack" is a name sometimes substituted for the perfectly good name John.

nyrifleman,
No, we're not accepting pre-orders quite yet, but will be soon. Will post it here then, but in the meantime will keep a list from this thread of those who said they wanted to order one. I'm confused. Has this thread turned into a pre-order request list?

Like so many threads around here, it took on a life all its own. I'm just happy to see the book is imminent for release, and, as soon as JB indicates it's open for bidness, I'll be placing my order.

Yes. All the prices on our website include both--and all books are autographed. If you want some special inscription, say for a friend you want to tweak, we include that too.

Okay, SOLD, add me to the list for one copy. Please include a snappy inscription - something like: "For MtnBoomer, He needs all the help he can get, and he needs it again and again...."

Yep, the website just started listing it yesterday.
Those who don't like using a credit card on the Internet can order by mail: Deep Creek Press, PO Box 579, Townsend, MT 59644-0579. As noted earlier the price of $32.50 includes shipped (media mail) and handling, and all copies are autographed. If you want something special with the autograph, just include a note in the envelope.
The books will be here sometime during the last week of October, and will be mailed then.

Hello John:
While I certainly would have enjoyed reading a chapter on the old 300 H&H, I know it's considered antiquated by most younger shooters, and is assuredly over shadowed by the many newer .300 hot rods.
But, I know I would enjoy sitting by the fireplace on a cold winter day reading this book, and likely learn something new on the other calibers I enjoy.
So, if you will, put me down for a copy as well.
Respects, Richard

I just tried to send a "form PM" to everybody who said they'd like to get the book, but if I missed you here it is: Pre-orders can be made by credit-card on our website, www.riflesandrecipes.com.Media mail shipping is included in the $32.50 price, and we autograph all our books. If you want an individualized autograph, either for yourself or somebody else, let us know in the space provided on the site. If you have problems with the website (they occur rarely, but do happen) and have a PayPal account, you can also send $32.50 to eileen riflesandrecipes.com, along with what it’s for and your mailing address. You can also send a check or money order for $32.50 to Deep Creek Press, PO Box 579, Townsend, MT 59644-0579, with a note including your mailing address, what you’re ordering, and any special autograph requests. If you prefer ordering by phone call Eileen at 406-521-0273. If you live outside the U.S. extra shipping will be necessary. If in Canada, our bank charges a LOT to handle checks or money orders, even if in American dollars, so it’s easiest to use a credit card, but we also accept Canadian cash, as we visit your fine country often. It’s probably easiest to phone 406-521-0273, or e-mail eileen riflesandrecipes.com. The books will be shipped as soon as the first printing arrives later in the month. Thanks!

baldhunter,
Most people aren't having problems ordering from the website, but somebody reported that when they ordered as a "guest," rather than registering, it went right through.
Sorry for the problems, but glad ordering through PP worked. And if anybody still has problems, phoning always works.

I just ordered my copy on the website with no problem. I predict that this book will become a classic. I already have a special place on my bookshelf reserved for it. Thank you, John, for bringing this book to fruition.

I just successfully ordered from your site after logging in (no "guest" checkout), and all went fine. The site does seem to be running a little slow - must be lots of traffic right now!

It's starting to look like the occasional problem may be related to the amount of traffic we've been getting on the website, which is probably heavier than we've ever had before. Here's what happened with somebody who was having problems:
"When it asks you to 'confirm order' it returned an error message that PayPal would not process the order. These were three banners on top of each other on the same order review page. I said 'what the heck' and clicked the confirm button again to see what would happen and it went through."

While we're patiently waiting.... I'm not a shotgunner but read, enjoyed and learned a bunch with SHOTGUNS FOR WINGSHOOTING. It was especially enlightening on load and choke selection that corrected some misperceptions from my rifle-centric upbringing. Well done. Recommend to all.

Glad you like SHOTGUNS FOR WINGSHOOTING!
Must confess, however, that was one of the books Eileen and I wrote for various publishing companies that pushed us into self-publishing. When the publisher originally approached me, their proposal was for a very "affordable" book, under $20 cover price, which meant that with the standard royalty agreement I'd get maybe $1.50 for each book sold, and most gun books don't sell more than a few thousand copies these days. It just wasn't worth my time to write it, and I told them so.
So they came back with a proposal to do a hardcover with color photos. The cover price would be enough higher than the first book to up the royalty considerably. So I said OK, and my contract was to deliver the manuscript and photos a year later.
They contacted me a month later and said if I could get it done in three months, a major bookstore chain would buy a bunch of copies and display them prominently. So I said OK, and got it done.
Well, they liked my photos so much they then decided to turn it into a coffee-table style book, printed on high-grade shiny paper with over 100 photos. Trouble was, this meant the cover price was $49.95. Now, even general book buyers go into sticker shock on books priced much over $30, and not many hunters are willing to pay 50 bucks for a book just because of pretty pictures. I told them this was a mistake, but they considered themselves publishing geniuses and said that's what they were gonna do.
In the meantime, the accelerated publishing schedule made them "forget" to send me page proofs before publication, to correct any set-up errors. This procedure is in every publishing contract. There were some errors, including a few from the guy who edited the manuscript.
Turned out I was right and the book didn't sell well. I never saw any royalties because my advance was never amortized--and the advance was as much as I make writing 2-3 magazine articles.
Other than the advance, the only money I made on the book was selling it on our website. But even the reduced price we could buy it for (about what bookstores pay) meant we had to sell it for $35 to make any money, but within a year we were seeing it for sale in various places for $25. We asked the publishing company about this, and they said they'd "remaindered" the book, basically selling it for the printing cost to book retailers. Also in my contract was a clause to be informed of a decision to remainder, giving me first option on buying books, but again they somehow "forgot" to tell me. Did manage to buy a few hundred at that point, which are what we're selling on our website for $26, which includes shipping.
A few months later the same publisher approached me about doing a hunting rifle book along the same lines. This meant THEY made money on my shotgun book, probably from the big bookstore deal. I told them I'd need a lot more money up front, but their best offer was way below what I needed.
That, however, was far from the worst of our experiences with traditional publishers. Had to take another one to court because he was cooking the account books to totally screw me out of royalties for a book that sold very well.
All of which is why we now have total control of our book publishing, including the account books!

That sucks John! I can completely see why you went to self publishing. I always figured it was simply due to getting a more fair cut of the profits, but if publishing houses were outright screwing you...
Glad it has worked out in the long run though.

Actually did OK on 3-4 books we did with traditional, but with most we would have been better off publishing ourselves. The Internet and digital printing made that far more practical than ever before, the reason so many writers are self-publishing these days.
There've always been problems in any business that supposedly pays royalties to authors, musicians, artists and even inventors. A lot of people are greedy, and also think they're smarter about making money than writers, musicians, artists and inventors. In some ways they're right, but the combination of greed and a superior attitude sometimes leads to outright theft!

JB, It is disturbing to hear how you were treated by that publisher. It makes me mad. If only everyone would just treat others the way they would like to be treated the world would be a much better place.
I am not much of a shotgunner, but I just went to the websight and ordered the book as a show of support for you and Eileen. It gave me an excuse to order the Loony Hat that I forgot to add on to my order for the Gun Gack book.
I have most of your books and have enjoyed every one of them. I am looking forward to some great reading this winter.

Yeah...not to mention that he threw a fit when he found out what was going to be in the book since he "knew it all 30yrs ago." But dammit...he's gonna be first in line even though dozens of us have already paid for our copy. I already knew all of this 30 years ago. Same old churning of data to bamboozle the rubes and dupes. Bill, You started reloading at 13, still can't figure out how to adjust a set of dies, maligned JB publicly before jumping like a school girl at the new book, and still can't figure out how to actually order the book in the first place? The only thing you've been at for 70 years is being a fraud in NY State, and that you're continuing for posterity it seems.
