Newest 99 arrived today, 30-30 barrel barely 20" really 19 from receiver ring. Receiver ring stamped tiny "Savage 1893", I think 99 with stamp healed up.

Pictures should be along in a bit. Rifle is nicer than I thought,my original plan was to D & T. May have to rethink that plan. Wish it had a 22" barrel. May have to keep searching for a 30-30 to hunt with.

What's the extra 2" gonna gain you in a 30-30? If scoping it is your end game, then the "Lightfoot mount" gets you there without compromising the value of your 30-30.

Money well spent, if it gets your 99 in the woods and keeps a 99 intact for the next generation of 99-lovers.

Pictures are sent to yooper35. I'm sure he will be along shortly with them.

I've got to come up with a D & T 303, 30-330, or 250. I have a set of Detcho Mounts begging to go on a rifle.

On another note, this is my first T/D. After opening the bolt, I can't turn the barrel any helpful hints? How does one move a really tight barrel?

Something like this.

Or this.

Do not apply much pressure if you use the square metal lug in the forend. Actually, there is no real reason to take the rifle down other than the satisfaction of knowing everything is free enough to do so. Make sure the barrel hasn't been made so as NOT to takedown. As in a possible weld.

It really is a 20" barrel. Length is measured from the bolt face, not the front of the receiver.

Thanks Norm. I'm a little up in the air, trying to decide to go Lightfoot mount or look for a D & T 30-30. Ceckered pistol or straight grip guns are the sweet spot for me. If I decide to move it will touch base with you. It is cute, sort of like an EG washed in hot water.

Yup, if I get a chance to chase a whitetail again it will be with a G with the homemade mount on it and an old Redfield 2-7X!
