When was the last time the murder rate in America was lower than 2014? Post a guess before looking at the answer. 1957. 1954-1957 ranged from 4.0 to 4.2, lower than 2014's 4.5. The next earliest year was 1909 at 4.2. These are per 100,000.

If black on black murders were on par with white on white murders, the number would drop from 4.5 to something no higher than 3.2, which hasn't been seen since about 1900.
curdog, if we look at violent crime rate, we are matching the late 60's or early 70's. Mostly the high violent crime rate is driven by a high rate of aggravated assaults. But our violent crime rate is still a lot lower than England. England has less murders and less gun crime, but more assaults/rapes/etc.
